Look! Inexpensive Workbench From Costco

121108-table4.jpg When we moved into our new loft, we wanted counter space. Not just counterspace, but COUNTERSPACE! After pricing more expensive options (having someone make it for us) we turned to our friendly big box store, Costco. It was a great find be it for a kitchen, garage (where it's marketed to be used) or studio space. Click through the jump to hear the price on this great find.

Since we are card carrying members at Costco, this workbench was bought off the shelf and 85% assembled for $199. As you can see, it's more expensive if you aren't a member, but we did find it on the website just in case anyone wants to track it down.
The top came fully assembled, all we had to do was bolt on the legs (which were also assembled) and cross bar support. It has been invaluable in our kitchen and would be a great addition for anyone who has the space.

Here's a few more shots of it:

The top is 2" thick and ready to take on any kitchen (or workshop) spill.

It's very solid and has held up without flinching to any test we have put it through so far.

We keep the dog's food at the base of it, as well as a bucket for dirty kitchen rags. Please excuse the towel under the dog dishes, we are on the hunt for something a little bit cooler.

I saw this at Costco too, and it looks wonderful. My question was that if it weren't up against a wall (as in the picture), would it be tippy if, say, it got knocked from one side? Have you had any chance to test its tippyness?

Being the graceful butterfly that I am... It's had many a shake test and has passed with flying colors. Our loft floor isn't 100% level and that's the only reason that ours shakes (if say one happens to be playing soccer with the dog in the kitchen and runs into it at full speed) occasionally.

Does anyone in here know how long this will be available? It would be awesome for the apartment I'm moving into but that isn't until Feb. How long does Costco sell things like this for?

Thanks for the post.

We first spied it before we ever moved, so late October? There's a good chance it will still be available later, but you can always call the store and ask to talk to the logistics manager to see how long they plan to stock it!

Hope your dog isn't the curious type...dirty kitchen rags near a pet area (food or not) seems like you're asking for trouble.

Then again, the dogs I know are crazy dogs. ;)

Can someone link to the site? I've found similar tables on the costco site but nothing that looks like this. Maybe I just haven't looked hard enough....

we have a couple of ikea plastic trays under our pet food dishes. they're fairly boring, being just solid red, but ikea also has all those melamine trays in interesting patterns, and i'm sure you could find something "cool" on ebay!

We have this in our dining area for an extension of kitchen counter space. Love it, but it's very heavy!

Here's an interesting development:

This item has resurfaced at Sears, under the Craftsman brand, part #146144. You can buy it in the tool department of most Sears stores for $229.99. It is on sale for anyone with a Craftsman Club membership (free) for $189.99 through January 2, 2010.

I just bought one of these and it is IDENTICAL to the one that used to be available in Costco stores.

Slight clarification to my previous post about the Sears version of this workbench: Upon closer look, it is not quite identical. It is still 8'L x 24"D x with black legs and butch block counter top. But the top is only 1.25" thick (which is still impressive), and the legs are a slightly different design. It is rated as supporting up to 500 pounds. By adjusting the legs, it can be set to anywhere between 34" and 36" tall.
