Look! Mid Century DIY Cardboard Lamp

070109-cardboardlamp.jpg While we were roaming around our favorite Mid Century store in Kansas City last week, one item stood out to us in particular. It didn't have a designer label, or a label at all for that matter, but what it did have was a ton of diy potential. Click through the jump to see how you could recreate it for your own home...

After examining the (in our opinion, overpriced) lamp up close, there are only 4 things that make up this lamp.
• A Lamp Wiring kit
• Two Wooden Circles
• Cardboard
• Weights

To recreate this look for your own home, simple cut holes in the middle of cardboard and wooden circles (which can be purchased precut from most major Hobby and Craft stores) for the wiring to run through. If buying a new wiring kit isn't in your budget, try picking up the ugliest lamp from your local thrift store (not the "cool kind" of ugly, but the "will never find a home" ugly) and gut it. Just make sure to examine the wiring for any flaws before purchasing.

In the example we found, the bottom wooden circle was weighted with fishing weights that were glued into predrilled holes. Making a new lamp is as simple as that and can be custom fit for particular spaces in your home!

Do you like the look? Or should it have stayed hidden in the basement where we found it? Leave us your thoughts below!

I think this project has a lot of potential to produce some very artistic lamps. With cardboard, it would be really easy to vary the sizes of the circles to create a sinuous silhouette, or you could go all-out and create a more topographical surface with amorphous waves. This would be a perfect project for someone with 3D modeling skills, which could be output to a laser cutter.

I think the lamp is part of Frank Gehry's cardboard series.

After more research, modcats has it listed as a "Flute Lamp" base from Gregory A Van Pelt.

Although I will still stick to my guns and say it's 100% diy-able!
