Look! Midwest Mid-Century Home

It's been fabulous weather the last few days in the Midwest, so we took mother nature up on the opportunity for a few photos without freezing our fingers to the bone. This house sits atop a hill in the Brookside neighborhood of Kansas City. Everyone thinks something different about it when they first see it, "Holy cow, it's like an angry owl!" or "It's a spaceship wearing a sombrero" but any way you look at it, this house is a great example of how fun architecture can really be...

The guys over at KC Modern have a bit more information on this house and here's what they have to tell us about it:

Name: Nicol Residence
Architect: Bruce Goff
Designed: 1965
Builder: Michael Rothstein Construction
Built: Third Version 1965
Size: 2868 sq. ft. 4 bedroom 4 bath

The residence is realized as a series of octagons, connected by a central living area, with a sunken conversation pit, fountain and fire ring centered under a large skylight. The present owners have an actual Sputnik spacecraft hanging under the skylight. The center of the roof is raised with a flat roof around the perimeter. The beautiful doors have Italian ashtrays as stained glass. The residence sits on a large heavily treed lot with a thirty foot by thirty foot reflecting pool, as well as a swimming pool.

Maybe someday we'll have the privilege of seeing inside for a tour!
Thanks KC Modern!

I work about ~ 3 blocks away from this house.
The architect is Bruce Goff. There's another example of his work on 67th St in Prairie Village, "Hyde Residence" in the gallery section of the kcmodern.com link below.

The first time I looked at this house I thought: public restrooms in a large park, perhaps with an Indian handicrafts store nearby. Seriously.

I'd love to see the inside though. The idea of that Sputnik really appeals to my geek side.

The windows all look too high to let you enjoy the view of lovely trees outside.
