Look! New Torsby Sideboard

2007-10-09-IMG_7859.JPG

An empty wall + the need for some storage in our bedroom = a long search for a simple piece of furniture.

We knew we didn't want (or need) a bulky dresser or armoire, and after living with the open space for a long time, we were sure we wanted something low profile and minimal. This Saturday, we took the plunge and brought home the Torsby...

2007-10-9-IMG_7861.JPGIntended for use in a dining room, it was the closest thing we could find to what we were envisioning and we are happy with it in the space.

The super shiny finish suits our high gloss white walls and the legs keep things looking airy and uncluttered.

We are unsure about how well it would stand up to daily wear and tear, but as storage that we'll only have to access now and then in the bedroom, it should work out fine.

We haven't decided whether we will hang the painting above the sideboard (that's why it's leaning in the photo...one decision at a time).

The Sunday morning assembly took some time - with the sliding doors, it was a slightly more complex job than the average IKEA project. But no complaints here - we think of IKEA assembly as grown up LEGO... putting it together is half the fun.

Torsby Sideboard, $299., available at IKEA.

Oooh, that's nice. I'm actually pondering the Grimle buffet (also IKEA). Much taller but very much of the same whiteness & simplicity. I haven't had the chance to make it over to IKEA in person yet though. Janel, did you check out the Grimle too or dismiss it instantly due to height?

Janel, love the simplicity. What shade of white did you choose for the walls?

We bought the Torsby over two years ago—it's in our hallway and I use it to store our sheets and towels. I love it and it is still in great shape.

Beautiful! Go with the colorful poster.
Just out of curiosity, do you know that the poster is from North Korea?

    thanks everyone

    ckp - good to know!

jiltawhirl - the lamp on the sideboard is from ikea, the floor lamp is from cb2

    dn - thanks!

sarah, saha and honeys - i do like the painting there too, but it means i'm moving it from somewhere else...a tough choice!

and honeys, yes! i did know that, thanks...it is actually a painting on paper that was used to produce posters. My brother in law kindly brought it to my husband and I from North Korea a few years ago.

Janel, I have been thinking about buying that sideboard for months. And was actually planning on making the trip out to ikea today to get it! Does it have the shiny finish on the top as well? Or just the doors? It looks awesome in your room! I think seeing the picture of it today in your house is a sign that i should go buy it! lol sue

I love my Torsbies...all three of them.

I bought a threesome to surround my bed in my loft. I actually put two together to make one long sideboard.

I love just touching the surface and the bright white is completely neutral--no pale yellow or blue tint.

I wish Ikea made more items in that set.

Wow, that looks so much nicer in your home than in the Ikea picture. I live 400 miles from the nearest Ikea and have to rely on their pictures; I hadn't considered the Torsby before even though I, too, have been looking at buffets for my bedroom.

I'm heading to Ikea next month...I'll be sure to check the Torsby out now!

Looks like you have a nice space with really high ceilings. That always helps with the open feeling.
I've also been attracted to both the Torsby and the Gimle.

BTW, anyone know if Ikea discontinued the Magiker series that showed up in so many homes on AT? I just looked it up on the site and couldn't find it.

I say go with the painting - it just feels incomplete without it.

I too have been considering the Torsby for use in the bedroom, but am in desperate need of drawers. Does anyone know of any other white/shiny storage solutions, or perhaps if it's possible to retrofit the Torsby with drawers?

To those who were wondering about the Grimle, note that it does NOT have the nice super-glossy finish as the Torsby. Also, I've noticed that all of the assembled models in the store have mis-aligned doors -- it doesn't seem to be one of IKEA's higher-quality pieces. The Torsby, on the other hand, is gorgeous and very well built (I find this is the case with many of their pieces that are designed to hold dishes). The quality is far beyond what you'd expect for $299 price tag.

Since this was originally posted in October - How has it held up to everyday use?

And did you get more artwork for the wall?

I second bepsf's question. I've been considering getting this and was wondering about how it holds up! Please let us know.

I offered the link because some people said they liked the print. I discovered the link through photojojo.com.

I've had my torsby for a year and loooooooooove it. also holds up well - a few times I overwatered a houseplant sitting on it, leaving some water/dirt rings, and they came off with a paper towel with no damage.

it looks great in your room!

I would really like to see a really large painting on the wall done in all white shades---something very abstract and full of texture. Make it slightly narrower then the chest and at least taller then the top of the door.
Get a big canvas and paint and do it yourself.

I laughed when I read your "with the sliding doors, it was a slightly more complex job than the average IKEA project", hehe. It reminded me of how it took me three (3) attempts of putting together completely, realizing something was wrong, taking apart, starting over again, etc, a bathroom cabinet with sliding mirrors a few years ago... I didn't have a bad time though! :D

i too love the torsby. we had been looking for a modern, inexpensive storage/sideboard piece for quite a while. it seemed as though the closest alternatives in so far as style were in the $2000 range. we are thrilled with this piece.

    http://www.flickr.com/photos/tarakriese/2813971595/

as you can see in the pictures, i added a few "blik wall decals" to pop the item and add some color contrast to the orange wall behind the piece.

for those interested, the orange is benjamin moore eco-spec "carrot stick."
