Look!: Our Own Tree Stump Stools/End Tables

020607stump1.jpgNot that we are the first to come up with this idea by a long shot, but the ReadyMade feature of how to make a tree stump stool reminded us of something we just did around the holidays for extra seating.

Late last summer we scored lots of firewood from Craigslist for our great intentions of an autumn full of bonfires. Since we had quite a bit left over, we thought of the wood when the holidays came and we played host to many people (without having many chairs).

020607stump2.jpg So we broke out the firewood, picked the chunkiest ones we could find, smoothed down the ends and sides a bit to avoid a big mess, and...there you go. Perfect for seating and side tables. Although we thought they would serve as a temporary solution, the stumps are still in our living room and we like it that way. One recent, final touch: we added felt to the bottoms so we could move them around more easily while preserving our rug and wood floors.

ReadyMade's version shows a hollowed out stump, great for storage. The How To steps are not available online, but they involve a lot of drilling for creating the storage cubby and lid. And guess what? They used felt on the bottom too. For the step-by-step instructions for ReadyMade's storage/seating stump, check out page 41 of the latest issue.

If you aren't hurting for storage or don't have the drilling supplies or skills, our simple version is a great way to go too.

In my fantasy world, I'd have a few of these spray-painted silver or gold and set about my house - in real life it would probably end up looking cheap and flaking everywell.

Fantasy world wins every time :)

Everywell? That's *so* not a word - I meant 'everywhere'!

Melanie - Everywell so is a word - if you really want it to be!

I have seen tree stump furniture at ABC Home in NYC. They had seats and coffee tables made out of smaller pieces which were joined together side by side with highly polished ends. Here in New Zealand I have an enormous pile of firewood which I now see in a new light!

I remember these brilliant stools and tables from my days as a poor and drunken student.

Add an oversized roadsign and voila - a modular coffee table.

west elm has tree stump stools for $199. it"s not the beautiful petrified wood at abc carpet & home but it can add that organic element to a room.
