Cities scramble before guests arrive, just like the rest of us. The RNC is coming, and with it, a last-minute public rejuvenation that's led Minneapolis' utility boxes to be refaced by local artists. This graphic nostalgia gave us a few ideas for home.
How this might apply:
A temporary outdoor installation decoupaged on scrap plywood
A foamcore wrap for a birthday party
An analog wallpaper wrap for the office bulletin board
A treatment for personal photos that's more graphic and less precious
A fearless take on wallpaper ala this post—including how-to
We can't wait to see what other surprises the RNC will bring to town...
Looks like a milkcarton:
"Have You Seen These Children?"

Yes - a milk carton. That was my first, second and third thought too.

That large image looks like it is from The Rasterbator: http://homokaasu.org/rasterbator/
Which is almost exclusively how I covered the walls of my college apartment with free gigantic "posters" printed at the library.

You see a lot of these types of things in la... they kinda piss me off. The ones in the above photo look like they were sanctioned. but for the most part the posters around here are illegal. That makes them just like graffiti. I'm for adornment, not alteration of public spaces.

This could be nice if done with taste and perhaps historical note......on the other hand I sure do dislike all the painting that is being done in cities on sides of buildings by local groups who just want to push their taste on others. I perfer the old bricks and layers of paint and texture over garish, badly done artwork in colors that are so bright you can spot them from the moon on a sunny day.

I live in the Twin Cities and work downtown St Paul. In our defense, St Paul (where the convention is actually being held, despite its claims of being Minneapolis-St Paul, and also jointly hosted with the city of Bloomington - still haven't figured out what the other cities have to do with anything other than maybe funding) has not done anything so hideous. Parks and Rec and Public Works have been working furiously for months to get the hanging baskets looking pretty, the city parks lush and green, and the streets so that they don't have cracks and the lines are clearly drawn on crosswalks.
There is no weird art stuff going on. Just a whole lot of tents set up for protesters and major traffic re-routing and other transportation issues for a week (and a lot of people deciding to take the week off work so they don't have to deal with it, so those of us who don't have that luxury get to cover for them - not really loving the convention being hosted in my town right now).
