Look! Review of the Thomas O'Brien Bookcase from Target

So, we purchased this Thomas O'Brien bookcase on both a hunch that it would work well for us and on AT readers' mostly glowing recommendations. What we didn't read until after the purchase, however, were comments about the wobble factor. Deciding to brave it anyway, we put the bookcase together (in about 10 minutes - super easy) and forged ahead...

It is a bit wobbly when bumped into (thankfully I don't go stumbling around my office too often), but otherwise the unsteady factor isn't really a factor. I'm certain it's not going anywhere. I opted to not anchor it to the wall so that I'll have flexibility for moving it to another part of my office or to another room. I prefer to have open ends and to use bookends, so am still happy I chose a less bulky shelving system than an enclosed one.

This is only a fraction of our books that need a home, so if I had the space I'd consider getting a second one and standing it next to its twin for one full wall of shelves. For now, though, I'm satisfied with this piece. And for the price ($179), the good quality (those shelves are tough) and good looks confirm our decision.

I had seen this bookcase featured and wanted one, only to find out Target wasn't selling it anymore. I was constantly checking Craigslist, and behold, this weekend found one for $150... perfect condition! It is the larger size, with two of the vertical brown supports. I have never been so pleased with a Craigslist find. It is soo sturdy, and perhaps because of it's wider size, not wobbly at at! To anyone curious about this shelf: a GREAT purchase!

What about bracing it to the wall with strategically placed brackets at about mid level? It would solve a little of the wobble factor.
