apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

Look! The House on a Hill

082008-house3.jpg This house stands tall overlooking the southwestern end of downtown Kansas City. From it's long flight of front stairs (carrying groceries in must be quite the task) to it's dark front porch, it's been on our "I have to get a picture of that house!" radar for quite sometime.. Click through the jump for a few more exterior shots of the place.

082008-house1.jpg Although this view of the house feels a bit like the Jawa Sand Crawler from Star Wars (sometimes our inner nerd interferes with daily life...) it's clean lines, differences in color and window size make it interesting to look at.

082008-sandcrawler.jpg Ok, so the Sand Crawler comparison is probably a stretch, but deep down we are still 12 and enjoyed the thought of it.

082008-house2.jpg The dark diamond plate on the stairs was a nice modern choice. Not only will it help with traction and be easy to clean, but will also withstand the elements. The front of the house faces West, which is the reason for having only one small window. The sun in this part of town can be pretty brutal. And who hasn't wanted a red door at some point in time?

Nice! Looks like you won the bet for who can figure out how to work the Jawa Sand Crawler into a AT post...

I like the house in general---perhaps the color needed to go more soft and beach house looking---not sure---maybe the photo's look to cold.
Landscape looks really great! Would not mind seeing some redish brown tall grass plants in a spot or so to work with the door color and help warm up the place.
Glad they did not use wood decking for the stairs!
One very minimal work of sculpture in the yard would be great---none of that hooky stuff that your best friend did in art school though!

ooh i like the color.. very dark and mysterious.. makes you want to slowly crawl up the stairs, ring the doorbell and run like hell.. without tripping down those stairs..

I like the simple industrial lines of this home, not to mention the red door. I would like to see what they did with the interior too.

Jaclyn,

It looks similar to a KRDB design. Check out their homepage, and also their homes at Agave in Austin.
