apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

Look!: What is Behind This Door?

090908-bass1.jpg Apparently we have a thing for commercial bathrooms recently. Here's another retailers bathroom that we could see practical applications for in our own home. Click through the jump to see what we found in the most unlikely of places.

090908-bass6.jpg We happened to be in Bass Pro for a bite to eat (and to look at their pretty fish tank). Fresh fish in the no-coast midwest states is unheard of, so this is as close as it comes without spending 80+ per plate. Our later trip to the little girls room revealed the following:

090908-bass4.jpg We found distressed/rusted/chemically treated, metal walls in combination with concrete floors. They felt rustic and fit the hunter's paradise of a theme the building has going for it, but our minds were suddenly swept away to our own homes. Cabinets? Sheds? Tables? Walls?

090908-bass3.jpg Each piece of metal was framed in with wood attached to metal poles anchored to the ground. The wood warmed up the metal and made it feel a bit cozier (as cozy as a bathroom gets anyway).

090908-bass5.jpg This is a close up(ish) of the metal that had been treated. The shapes formed appeared to be totally random and almost formed continents or land masses of sorts (or maybe we just need to keep our imagination on a leash).

090908-bass2.jpg The rest of the bathroom wasn't anything to write home about. Sponge painted walls and prints of women (President's wives usually) fishing and hunting take up the rest of the space. We're just glad the small taxidermy squirrels (found atop retail displays out on the floor) weren't sitting on the counter staring at us (Oh yes, there are squirrels... and raccoons too!)

Restaurant? In the Bass Pro Shop? I must admit, I don't really know what to think about that.

I kept reading does as "duz." Then I realized it meant female as in deer. I'm a little slow sometimes.

It was sort of a rebus of "Does a bear shit in the woods?" except with the international symbol of a person wearing a dress. I didn't expect the woods to be so handicapped-accessible. I was waiting for the other bathroom door puzzle to reply "Does the [person wearing pants] wear a funny hat?" which is funny, since the pope wears I don't know what under his robe, but that's kind of like a dress.

Additionally, I'm sure this effect was spectacular in person, but it kind of does not (ha ha) come off that well in pictures. It kind of looks like a place you want to hurry up and return the key, and hope you can hold your breath that long.

I did the "duz" thing about a "duzen" times too... Perhaps we all would have caught on if the door was next to the "Bucks" door?

The rusted metal reminds me of gorgeous glaze effects I (occassionally) and colleagues (more often) used to be able to get using oxides on pcs in the pottery studio. Sigh. Gorgeous stuff that looks organic AND industrial at the same time. Agree with Sarahrae and most posters on "does" and the general ick of the bathroom, but I love the metal effect too!
Any idea how it's done?
