Look!: Woodblock Prints by Bronislaw M. Bak

071707bakprints.jpgWe hit up some garage sales a couple weekends ago, and scored with a set of woodblock prints: One-Hundred Views of Chicago. Our set was down 13 prints (the owner let her daughter color on them years ago!), so we walked away with 87...and we LOVE them. We did a little searching online to find out what they were worth at Wright auction: $500-700. Not bad for some casual scavenging.
500 editions of the print set were made in 1967 here in Chicago. We think it's so fun that we ended up with at least part of one...

What are some of your best, most recent and/or unique garage sale finds??

What a gorgeous set. Blockprint is my favorite medium, and having a huge collection of Chicago scenes... I'm jealous.

My best garage sale find was an adorable small picnic basket, with two rectangular stacking compartments (picture a rectangular bamboo steamer). It was $2 and it's the perfect size for one or two... I can just grab it and walk out to the lake like it's my backyard.

I just wanted to let you know that someone is selling a complete set on ebay for $4900. That seems a wee bit high for a collection that is not signed. That said, I am insanely jealous of your garage sale find! I think my favorite finds were an orange school locker, a danish credenza and bronze sailboat cleat (very sculptural).

(and I'M jealous of your bronze sailboat cleat! sounds great)

Here is the ebay listing
Item number: 280133483052

I emailed the seller to see where they had gotten their appraisal information and their response was "I am sorry that I no longer have the information. We found the auction source on the Web and the sold price was $9,000.00. At the time we called them to see if they wanted another one to sell but they did not - I would guess it may be because they just sold one and to offer another set would not bring as much."

In the interest of knowledge (and 'cause I have too much free time) I called Wright and found that the collection that they had for sale in May 2002 did not sell and did not fetch the $500-700 price they had listed.

Still, you got a bargain no matter what you paid!
