Habitat for Humanity ReStores

2007-04-05-habitathouse.jpgAn excellent reader tip from Jacob: "You may or may not have heard about the Habitat for Humanity Re-Stores, but they're GREAT!

Essentially, Habitat receives a lot of donations from companies that they never use for the homes. Instead, they sell the donations to the public and use the proceeds to build future houses. "

"For example, while re-doing my bathroom (coincidentally coinciding with Bathroom Month!) I got real slate tile for $.90/sq. ft. I also got a number of tools and other things at a great value. Just a tip, for what it's worth!"

It sounds like a great resource. We checked the Habitat for Humanity site and while there were none in Chicago we did find multiple locations throughout Illinois and beyond...check for all the locations here.

I love the Habitat ReStore - I've gotten several pieces of furniture from there when I lived in charlotte, nc. Their stuff is usually in really good condition, and the prices are rock-bottom, too.

Yep, I picked up a nice mod ceiling pendant light at a Habitat ReStore in Michigan for $10, and the one near me in Ohio always has odds and ends that are perfect for smaller projects.

Wow, thanks for this tip. Whenever I see something interesting like this, I usually find that the store is not in Canada. But there actually is one of these stores in my city - just down the street! I am going to check it out this weekend for sure.
