021009gingerlogo.jpgAbout 60 miles northwest of Chicago, near the Wisconsin border, sits a few giant old barns filled with rugs, furniture and antiques purchased by the farm's owner, Ginger Blossom. Ginger travels the world (specifically South America and Asia) for her wares, with a commitment to working under fair trade principles:

In keeping with Ghandi's principle of micro-industry, and working under the guidelines set by the Fair Trade Federation, Ginger Blossom buys from small scale producers who are paid an equitable wage, work under safe conditions, and do business in an ecologically sustainable manner.

Our experience at Ginger Blossom was phenomenal. Not only did we catch Ginger while not traveling, but she spent a lot of time teaching us about the different weaves, designs and histories of all the rugs. With prices on wools and silks very reasonable (think $100-$400 for a 5' x 7' rug, depending on the type and origin), Ginger encouraged us to bring two rugs home "on loan" for 30 days, with the belief that you can't know if a piece works in your home until it's actually in your home.

In December, we bought two and have been nothing but happy with the rugs. With lessons on cleaning and which type are best for various levels of foot traffic, we've never had a shopping experience quite like this.
