Milo Baughman
Designer Dossier

Designer: Milo Baughman, 1923 - 2003

From: United States - Born in Kansas, Moved to Long Beach, California as a baby

Milo Baughman is one of our favorite 20th century furniture designers. His work is both distinctive and influential and while representative of its time, it always strikes us as part of a very personal vision and style. A Baughman piece always seems far more "Baughman" than just "sixties" or "seventies"...

Facts:

  • Designed the interior and exterior of his family home when he was 13
  • Served in the Air Force during WW2 and also designed officers clubs
  • Worked with Thayer-Coggin for 50 years

Quote: Furniture that is too obviously designed is very interesting, but too often belongs only in museums.

Attended: Art Center School, now called California Institute of the Arts

Known for: California Modern, Chrome, Burled Wood

Love these designs - I hope that one day they're reissued by some enlightened manufacturer!

If you simply switch out the rosewood and burled woods with faux macassar and other less expensive options, these pieces can hit a very low price point.

I have a couch just like this one! I'm downsizing and need to sell it. Anyone know how much it would be worth?
