My Great Outdoors: A Window Box Vegetable Garden

2009greatoutdoorsbadge.gifName: Mkonieczki
Location: Chicago
Type of space: Window Garden

Tell us about your outdoor project and how you enjoy it: Living in the city leaves little space to enjoy summer gardening and home-grown produce, but thanks to our Earth Boxes, we're able to grow an array of veggies in our kitchen windows!

How did you create it?:
We installed a support board in our kitchen window sill to match the width of the Earth Boxes. We also installed a cable to contain the front end of the Earth Boxes, so they are stable during heavy winds/weather. Earth Boxes come mostly equipped with everything you need to start a container garden (with the exception of plants). The boxes have a built in irrigation system and all the fertilizer and pH balanced soil necessary for a growing season.

There's a course at a local farm nearby that teaches you how to make these. The class is $25, materials included. I'm taking it next weekend, mainly for ideas so I can teach it at my smallholding one day. $100 for two window boxes is simply ridiculous when the DIY option is available, much more affordable, and not very time consuming. My window boxes do great, as is.

What's with ridiculous? Where there's a will, there's a way! Nice job!
