My Great Outdoors: Julia's Balcony Haven

2009greatoutdoorsbadge.gifName: Julia
Location: London, Ontario
Type of space: Balcony

Tell us about your outdoor project and how you enjoy it: I moved here last year after many years of owning a house, and was concerned that not having a backyard would be restrictive. On the contrary, I find it freeing - I come home and it's waiting for me, little work to be done, just there to be enjoyed - dinner, drinks with friends, reading ... it's my own little haven and I love it!

How did you create it?:
I had some old chairs that I spray painted lime green, and as I was used to having a garden I knew I needed to plant something edible! My planter box of cilantro, parsley, dill, chives and basil provides me with enough herbs for myself and any friends that happen to drop by. All my herbs were purchased from a local organic farmer - other than soil and plants, everything else was either someone else's discards or bought at thrift shops.

Recommended store, site, product or resource?
With the exception of the square planter which is from Home Depot a couple of years ago, my pots and planter are from thrift stores or garage sales. The black boston fern stand was from someones garbage and I spray painted it black. Lime chairs originally from Ikea and were pewter colored (years ago), cushions Ikea, and Indian style lantern from Homesense.

Very cozy and cute! That's true of having more enjoyment than work with a small area. Just a little watering of potted plants and the rest of the time is spent relaxing....

Yeah, I seriously love this. The citrus-y colours and all the little pots of plants. Throw a pitcher of sangria on the table and I'm going to start using this as my 'happy place' when I have a crap day at work and need a mental escape.

I love the color scheme and esp. the yellow pot of pansies between the two chairs. I have a tiny patio and I will definitely borrow from you when its time to fix my "happy place" up. Thanks for sharing!

Pretty! I thought it was New Orleans or Savannah, never would have guessed London, Ontario!

Looks like the perfect place to relax and recharge!

Not really a fan of the minty-green wicker though. Could you paint it the same color as the other chairs?

I really like the pops of pink – they really stand out from the citrus-y greens. I'm not really a pink kind of person, but it works.
