My Great Outdoors: Lydia's Green-Fenced Backyard

Location: Evanston, Illinois
Type of space: Backyard

Tell us about your outdoor project and how you enjoy it: We started working on our outdoor space five years ago. Our problem was to create a private space without putting up a huge fence. We built trellis', grew climber plants on them and now we have a green fence! It's private but green and lush.

How did you create it?:
We took up the concrete sidewalk and added a flagstone curved path to match the existing patio. Also, we planted plants native to the area and kept our fingers crossed.

Recommended store, site, product or resource?
For new larger trees, we decided to hit nurseries. For all other plants, we purchased plants at Lowe's, Home Depot. We have been lucky so far!

Very nice!
We are vacillating between a similar trellis or fence. What climbers do you use on the trellis? Are they hardy and, if not, does it look stark in the winter?
Thanks.

Hi clintonvillebill,
We used Sweet Autumn Clematis and an interesting climber, an Akebia. We also chose climbing hydrangea too. (All zone 5). The Akebia is a vigorous grower and likes shade as is the clematis.
Good luck!

Love, Love this backyard space...I have always said that a small backyard will and can make you more creative than a larger space...just very inviting and cozy...good going...
