Dare we call the pothole situation in Chicago a crisis? We've heard of bike accidents, car accidents, tire/wheel damage, twisted ankles, and lost items. On my own street, there are dozens of deep holes; leaving home by car requires great caution and biking keeps me in the alleys until I'm in a "safe" zone.
