After sizing down from large apartments with roommates back in 2001, we moved into a studio of about 300 sq ft. We adored that little place, as much as we adored the freedom that came from living solo with less space and less stuff.
We've since sized back up and co-habitated, but sometimes we still have daydreams of our little apartment: we had so little to clean, had a precise place for every single thing, and always kept things picked up so we could move around the place comfortably and have guests.
Even with these daydreams, though, we most often think that at some point we will be sized out of our current, larger place now (900 sq ft for 2 people). I find this size close to perfect for two, but wonder if every time one gets a bigger place it means one will constantly need - or desire - bigger. Of course a growing family requires change and space expansion, but in general do you think that we are always on the quest for the next size up? Do you think it's possible to stay small for a lifetime (if no more people are added to the household)?

We have about 650 sq feet for two in Chicago and I love it. We had about 900 sq feet at our last two places in cheaper areas in the Midwest, and we had to size down when we moved here. I always found that our 2nd bedroom just ended up being a gathering area for the things we didn't need/didn't want to look at, and ended up being wasted space.
I know if we expand the family someday we may need another bedroom, but I don't think I ever want to go above 1000 sq feet. Small is cool.
