We were digging around on 1st Dibs yesterday and came across some surprising info...
It seems that THE place to buy 20th century design these days is online. The total sales of pieces sold through 1st Dibs is more than the sales at several major auction houses combined.
Check out the BIG numbers below the jump:
For 2006 at 1st Dibs:
Total sales reported $152,250,000
20th century design $114,000,000
19th century and earlier $38,250,000
Total items listed 45,970
Total items sold 23,167
The founder of 1st Dibs, Michael Bruno, goes on to show the 2006 sales numbers for 20th century pieces from Christies, Sotheby's, Wright (yay Chicago!), and Philips, de Pury & Co, as presented in the April issue of Art and Auction:
We use 1st Dibs often to help put together Scavengers and do research, but haven't made a purchase through them -- did any AT readers bring home one of the 23,167 items sold last year??

AND....they wil spam you incessantly. AND....Yahoo smap filter for some reason won't filter their spam even after you hit the SPAM button. Seriously, I cannot get them to stop emailing me.

I wish! I swoon over the items there. 1stDibs would be my answer to the question, "If you could outfit your house from any "store", what would it be?"
