apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

December with Apartment Therapy...

121106SnowGlobes.jpgDuring this final stretch of '06, AT is all about bringing on the new ideas with a little pre-holiday flare. Our first annual holiday Gift Bag giveaway has shown the generosity and taste of some of our favorite shops around the country (Chicago's Jayson Home and Garden donated the fantastic Sputnik chandelier last week!). Be sure to check out the upcoming gifts and shoot off an email (per instructions) to be in the running. Other AT happenings:

We're excited about our search for new blogger for AT: The Nursery. All candidates for the new blogging positions are being posted on AT: NY for your feedback and comments (see Dec. 5-Dec. 8 posts so far...).

And of course, the Best of Chicago carries on: Please continue to nominate and vote for your favorite shops in Chicago, which we will be highlighting throughout the rest of the month.

Thank you all for helping us make AT what it is, and for your ongoing participation, ideas, and opinions!

i love those homemade snowglobes - anyone know what you use for the snow?

I wanna know about those handmade snowglobes, too! What do you use for the snow, and what do you use for the liquid? Water is too light -- but olive oil (yes, I tried that once) isn't such a good idea.

hi sally and robin:

i found that image here. scroll down to the bottom of the page to find the instructions and materials (they used distilled water and glitter for the snow).

any other suggestions?

You can also use mineral oil, but be careful it can get pretty messy. Uncle Fun on Belmont has inexpensive little figurines to put inside, as well as any hobby shop that carries dollhouse accoutrements.

sally & ron -- re: the snowglobes
this article was originally in martha stewart living. i know because i was totally intrigued, being a snow globe lover, and immediately set out to make a bunch for gifts. well, the best laid plans of mice, men and martha...the idea was better than the execution. the glycerine didn't mix with the water and the glitter ended up in little clumps. if you try to make some, i hope you guys have better luck than i did!

That's right.. another Martha Marvel....
check it out on my blog for details on how to create. Actually quite easy... I made one two years ago and it still looks like a globe a la winterwonderland! Let it snow...(:

I used to make these globes. I used white glitter for the snow. Word of caution - don't ship them. I made some and sent them in the mail and they showed up as empty jars in a wet box. But I loved making them and they make great gifts if you keep them out of the mail.
