apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

July is Hot! (and it's also Pet Month....)

2006-07-17-hot.jpg

July is flying by. It's feels like it's on fast forward and someone definitely turned up the heat. What's your plan when a heat wave hits?

We'd like to say we are in the zen-like camp, but we generally go for the AC and an icy beverage or two.

When it gets this hot, our Pug wants to go out as usual but then only makes it to the first shady spot (about 3 feet from the front door) and goes on strike. She looks at us with "It's just too hot for the regular jaunt up the alley" in her eyes. We coax her along, but understand where she's coming from.

We'd like you to use this thread for ideas/tips/suggestions on how you keep yourself (and fellow humans), your home, and your pets happy, healthy, and cool when it hits 100.

And, if you've come up with an inspired pet-cooling contraption, send it in....we're still taking entries in our Pet Contest...

It was "all of the above" for me this weekend. I could hardly wait to get to work this morning in my over-air conditioned office!!

Yesterday it felt like sticking your head inside an oven. When it gets to be that hot, there is no relief outside, so I stay inside with the window ACs on full blast, fans osilating and all the blinds closed. My cats get antsy for some sunlight on the days we keep the apartment closed up tight. But they are able to stay pretty cool and comfortable.

Or go see a movie! That's the best way to beat the heat.

After honeymooning in Aruba where the sun was incredibly hot and intense, I learned that in order to survive it you need find a shady spot and not move a muscle. A cold beer also helps.

After one too many beach closures, I'm way too icked out to go swimming in the lake. Which is a shame, because it is only a few blocks away!

we got the window unit in the bedroom that we turn up (that we really only turned on because of the cat), use a fan to push the cool air out to the living room. turn off the computers 'cause there's nothing to help that room. and drink lots of cold beverages. i drop ice cubes into the cat's water, and she sprawls as close to the bedroom as she's allowed. and the best is to go outside in the icky heat, then come in and eat ice cream, that way i can justify the ice cream as a means of cooling down!

You need an all of the above category.

I take a lukewarm bath or shower before bed, sleep on the couch downstairs if really hot, have celing and standing fans going, and all windows open. Also washing your sheets but not drying them before bed really helps too.
