We've got just one more week to focus exclusively on our outdoor home life. Over at AT:NY, they are turning to outdoor lighting specifically this week, so be sure to check in there for some thorough lighting inspiration.
From weekend lounging to evening dinners or early morning coffee, the outdoor home is an interesting space both shared with the world and made personally your own. What makes your outdoor space feel like your very own - independent from the rest of the great outdoors?

Mine isn't mine yet, so I need everything. In any case, where would I get a cool plastic rug like that? I feel like I've seen them around (Gethsemane actually comes to mind) but is there anywhere else where I might find them (cheaper)?

I'm really starting to grow into my outdoor space. I'd also like to say I feel bad for knocking clotheslines in certain situations. My issues stem from irresponsible neighbors, who I'm sure aren't concerned about saving the environment by hanging out their clothes (maybe saving money to buy cigarettes to flick on my balcony). People who hang out their clothes are smart and forward thinking and should be able to hang out their laundry no matter where they live (as long as it's not in the way of any flight patterns.)
My plants and my Ikea furniture and bbq are the things right now that make my balcony feel like my own. The plants really have to be number one though because many of them I have started from seed. They all need to be taken care of and the whole process is very cathartic. I love the way I can transform the space into a comforting, relaxing and sculptural place that is inviting to other people. I know want to wake up just a little bit earlier so that I can have a cup of tea outside, listen to the birds and check out the progress.
I'm looking forward to discussions on outdoor lighting because I have been thinking about incorporating a couple types into my space.

Because we enjoy our outdoor spaces mostly in the evening, I have to say, outdoor lighting is a necessity. It not only showcases the main feature - your prized plants and flowers, it makes your space more livable and inviting.
We use uplights and downlights to highlight our garden leading up to our entryway. On our balcony, simple little tealight lanterns. And on our rooftop garden, we have a hanging wrought iron sculpture strung with lights which doubles as an art piece and chandelier. It provides just enough light to see your plastic glass of wine and your partner in conversation!
