apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

New Modernica Website

We checked in with Modernica online and were happy to see that they have a new, revamped website catalog. Good news, since their New York and Chicago showrooms have closed and we Midwesterners can only buy online. We like Modernica as a source for Bubble Lamps and Case Study furniture, and they offer free shipping on all lighting.

Since the closing of their Chicago store last month, they only have one remaining showroom in Los Angeles.

I never understood Modernica, are they knock-offs or what? It would seem they offer both originals and "inspired" pieces. Both at "original" prices. Can somebody please explain what their relationship is with the original designers?

I appreciate the flexibility of choosing different configurations but am concerned with long-standing value.

okay, found this, offers some insight:

So they're all knock-offs then, which of course, begs the question "so what"? I've been waffling on this for a while now. I'll try to consolidate my feelings numerically.

1. IKEA is probably the only truly "modern" company, as modernity is an ideology and not a style...good design for the masses. 5k for formica is just wrong, and fiberglass wasn't utilized to increase profit margins.

2. I AM offended by shameless rip-offs, IKEA included. When I discover the uncredited "inspiration" behind countless IKEA products...presented beside romantic b/w photos of the "designer" I feel cheated.

3. There are a lot of folks out there that don't know who the Eames' were (believe it or not). And these visionaries DO deserve recognition at the least. If not monetarily at least in spirit.

4. DWR pieces are reproductions just as Modernica are reproductions, so the value of "licensing" is debatable. Is an Eames lounger built in 2007 really worth all that much either way? Or is the value in the eyes of the beholder?

Which I guess brings me to the annoying answer. It just depends. Its all what it is. Don't ever lie to me. Let me decide the value and predict its equity.
