apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

GreatBigStuff.com isn't a typical store we'd review for Apartment Therapy, but we stumbled onto it and it cracked us up. If you're looking to bring a little Claus Oldenburg-style humor to your apartment, you might want to check them out. Need a giant pair of scissors, a foot-long paperclip, an oversized computer key stool, or a set of giant legos? They've got it...

Admittedly, it's a little silly, but we've seen oversized objects used to cool effect before: the giant paperclip hooks in our post on offbeat entryways, a giant task lamp from Roche Bobois, and Christien Meindertma's giant knitting needles all come to mind.

An added bonus: GreatBigStuff sells giant underwear. (Remember that episode of Pee Wee's Playhouse? We wanted giant underwear so badly as a kid. Unfortunately, we've since outgrown the wish to own a pair for ourselves.) For more information, visit GreatBigStuff.com.

I hate my job way too much to have something that looks like it belongs on a keyboard in my home.

I love these stools! Playing with scale like this is one of the great themes of modernism, and when it's done well (like this) the result is spectacular, and makes us see 'mundane' objects and forms in such interesting and novel ways. Thanks for finding this!

Do people really sit on stools? This site has such a hard-on for them, but in real life, they're just something to trip over.

Why when you click on GreatBigStuff.com does it take you back to this post? I've noticed that a lot of links within the articles do that recently. That, along with the "Read More..." links that don't take you to "more" but back to the top are such huge usability annoyances. Is it just me that's being driven nuts by that?

I agree with lightspeed's comment. These are fun.

Whether you sit on a stool would depend on its height, I should think. If it's comfortable to sit on, and at a comfortable height, sure, why not? Also you can use them for side tables or ottomans.

I find stools really useful, for pulling up to the coffee table to play games and things. And we drag them outside for barbeques.

I like flat tops on them, though... they're usable for tables that way.

I agree with mgn about the links and such not working, it drives me crazy!
Other than that, I went to the greatbigstuff.com site and now I just HAVE to have a behemoth sized chess set.

I don't think stools are comfortable for sitting for long periods of time because there's no back support.

This takes me back to my childhood when I really wanted a giant crayon I saw in a store.

I'm thinking there's some really great potential for Halloween costumes at that site.
