Tatine Candles

082107tatinecandles.jpgInteresting timing, because we just walked past the old Tatine Candles location on Division St. last week and wondered where they went (the shop is now closed).

Today we received an email that Tatine has gone from storefront to web shop. Although the in-store experience was really lovely and warm - and the shop sold more than just candles - the online replacement is a great switch.

082107candlewax.jpgWith more than 100 scents, the handmade soy-based candles include the standard Tatine pillars which are created from memories of scents, foods, and places...such as Paris, Tuscan Olive, Yuzu.

Oh, that's too bad. I like Tatine, but I'm probably less likely to purchase from them now, simply because candles and other scented products are the kinds of stuff you want to be able to sniff in person before you buy, rather than ordering unsniffed online.

I'm so glad to know Tatine is still going. I agree it would be hard to choose something since scents are rather personal, but all of her candles smell so delicious. I've been buying her candles for years and they burn really well and last a long time.

I agree with dpunjabi. I love candles and I buy so many but only because I know for sure how they smell. Everyone sells fig scented candls, but Dyptiques smells totally different then Henri Bendels...and the same applies for all of the others. It's so personal and there are nuances that make a big difference. That's why I don't buy candles online unless I am already familiar with them. I made that mistake with the Voluspa candles that sell for $120 each. Now I am stuck with 4 of these recommended candles that I don't really like.

You can also get a small selection of Tatine candles at Cellar Rat wine shop at 1811 W. North Ave. Cellar Rat is owned by Margo's (Tatine's) husband and he has poured candles (not pillars) at the store. And great wine. Last time I was in there, he said she has taken up residence at the Coyote building nearby and will occassionally host events at her studio to sell a wider selection.

She also has a small stock at Asrai. While it lasts I suppose.

She stopped making votives in more than 2 scents & I had my suspicions she'd be moving soon...

I love her stuff & the quality is great. Unfortunately for my pocketbook I am familiar with enough faves to confidently order online.

I was amped when I got that email yesterday. :)

I've been a big fan of these candles for a very long time. Them smell great, burn very clean and last long. I won't buy any other candles. I get mine at the Celler Rat when I'm picking up my wine. Great store! Can't wait to order on line. I love her patisserie line and they make great gifts and are great to travel with.
