Has anyone seen the new condo buildings being built on Damen Ave. that are (I think) just a little bit south of Chicago Ave.? They're very modern looking, very cool. There's a banner out front that says something like goodbuildings.com, but I can't remember what exactly it is. Anyone know?

Goodbuildings.com is building a property there, but I don't think its condo - I think its single family. If there is a condo being built there then I think it must be some other company (and sorry, I unfortunately don't know the name of them!).

New thread, old topic -- NYC and (NOT vs!) Chicago...

I've been in Chicago for 10 years now. Moved here for college, stayed after I graduated for my husband's career, then stayed for law school, then stayed for my own career. I love the fact that we could live here 8 years ago on less than $20K between us and still have a great deal of fun and still really enjoy this city. I honestly don't feel anything is missing here -- we've got superb theater, top-notch restaurants (lifting the ridiculous foie gras ban would be nice, but restaurants are still awesome here!), fantastic night life, decent public transportation, world-class architecture... but without the NYC attitude! :)

Don't get me wrong, I love NYC. I've got oodles of friends there, there's so much to love there and I've been tempted to move there too (especially when I got into NYU for law school). Haven't pulled the trigger, and now I'm not likely to because I discovered just how frequently American Airlines flies between Chicago and NYC! Since I travel for work, I tend to rack up the frequent flyer miles... so we've day-tripped to NYC on award tickets! Fly out at 7 a.m. Central time, in Midtown by 11 a.m. Eastern time for some shopping, lunch and a Broadway matinee, time for dinner with friends, then hop on a 10 p.m. flight home. Back in bed (in our affordable home!) before midnight...

Completely new topic: has anyone else left their plants outside? I'm trying to decide if it's worth it to try to save our rosemary plant by bringing it in -- we don't get much sunlight inside because it gets blocked by our upstairs neighbor's balcony, so I'm thinking it may be a lost cause. Ditto for our orchid...

Virginia, out here in Cleveland rosemary will winter pretty well. I say leave it out and see what happens.

So, Chicago--as an expatriate New Jerseyan living in Cleveland, I'm all intrigued by the idea of moving there. Bigger and more exciting than Cleveland, I know, but how is it on the Midwesterness? Are black wits and bossyness allowed?

Your plants will die (if not through suicide) if they stay outside in a Chicago winter. Rosemary does well just about anywhere... plus the aroma of rosemary in the winter is quite nice...

As for Chicago's Midwesterness... Chicago is not part of Illinois, not part of the Great PLains, and not part of the Midwest. It's a city of nearly 6 million with as much snarkyness and wit as any other international metropolis. There is however something quiter about Chicago... you can do, and if somebody happens to notice that's nice but you're still going to do regardless...

And if you need a dose of snide wit, attitude, and hipster snobbery one can always head to Wicker Park. hehe...
