Style and Substance: The Best of Elle Decor

We're enjoying our review copy of the new Elle Decor coffee table book titled Style and Substance. Filled with photos from the magazines 20 years of archives, it creates a bit of time capsule - a portrait of home style in the 1990s & 2000s. The book is organized by room, a format that works well, especially if you...

... are seeking inspiration for a design challenge in a specific room.

At the moment, a box of framed photos that we've been wanting to hang in the bedroom are residing in our storage closet in the basement, while we wait for inspiration to strike. I love the treatment done in the first photo above - a no holes barred, intensely packed wall of frames may just be the way to go....now I just need the soaring ceilings to go along with the frames!

Collection display solutions shown above, left to right:

1. Paul Donaher's bedroom with an entire wall of British royal portraits; decorated with Nannette Brown. Photographed by Laura Resen.

2. A custom made open cabinet in an all white kitchen makes the large collection of china a focal point in decorator Kristiina Ratia's home. Photographed by Pieter Estersohn.

3. A weekend house bathroom completely lined with shallow shelving; designed by Kerry Joyce, wall color by Donald Kaufman. Photographed by Dominique Vorillon.
