Hmm...the Ghost Antler rack is neat, but pricey. A quick search on CraigsList and Ebay turned up tons of mounted racks and (for those who might be bothered by a hunter's trophy) naturally shed antlers for a fraction of what Erich's cast replicas cost. Spray paint 'em if you're not into the lodge-y look.

Too kitschy/gaudy for my taste. I currently use a coat closet and if I didn't have that I would use a traditional wood and brass coat rack or install brass hooks in a stained wood plank on the wall. Simple and decidedly not fussy. I really dislike the multicolored ball rack. I just don't understand the appeal of this fad.

I'd hardly call the popularity of Eames' designs a fad:)

Oh, but I think it is. Eames is not untouchable and not to everyone's taste. I suppose seeing it constantly in house tour after house tour tarnishes it a bit in my eyes. It seems more well suited for a child's room. Different strokes for different folks!

as much as i don't like the eames one - it seems to be the only rack that would go well in my living room. Something about it just irks me, but imagining it in my living room (which is a blue/peacock color with red and yellow accents), seems to just click. Maybe that will be the one thing in my apartment that isn't craigslisted/donated to me.

I love the Eames rack, but more as an objet d'art than as a functional coat rack... those balls would make it hard to hang some items w/loops, and hanging a garment by its collar or its hood over the balls might make an unsightly 'bump' in the fabric.
I like #5 and #8.

saucymonkey, let me clarify: I am not arguing that Eames designs are "untouchable" or that not liking them is some sort of sacrilege (I've never cared for the rack much myself)...just that they aren't a passing "fad" as you had suggested. This design in particular was originally created over fifty years ago end even in re-issue has stuck around over a decade. Just sayin':)

I just bought the silly spralig moose rack from Ikea (we desperately needed a coat rack or something in the new place- hall closet too cramped for quick tossing). I LOVE it!! It's so fun & playful- but it's huge! We put it just inside the stairs to the basement/game room though- so it's easy to get to, but somewhat out of sight.
I like the Eames one, and it'd go with my decor, but I just can't justify the price- especially when I frankly like the $20 red moose from ikea just as much!!

I like the concepts of these racks and hooks but wouldn't want them in my home. Some look a bit hazardous and even dangerous. I suppose that's why most of these are hung up high but I can imagine children or my clumsy self rough-housing and getting injured on that shoe rack in Row 1.

As a professional organizer, I love hooks - they are easy to use, so things are more likely to get hung up.

Loving that wall-mounted shoe rack in the first picture. Looks like a great DIY project!
