In the Interim: Useful Ideas After a Move

10-8-08floorcushions1.jpgYou know when you pack up and move, and rid yourself of a lot of the stuff you don't want to fill up your "fresh new start"? It's a great feeling, but you're then left without...maybe without some chairs, a sofa, the right type of storage for a new layout and differently sized space...

Waiting for what you really want/need/can afford is always a good rule of thumb, but it rings especially true post-move, when you might be without some things and feel you really can't be for too long. Here are a few ideas of what to use in the interim; things that will stick around and continue to be useful after you've fleshed out your home's furnishings and longer term needs:

1. Floor cushions in lieu of a sofa or extra chairs
2. Find a great sideboard that can make the rounds at home for multiple uses over the years.
3. A small, inexpensive kitchen table (like this IKEA one) that might later be used for a kids' room, a craft room, small office, etc.
4. A futon for now (while you shop around for the perfect bed), if you'll later have space and need for guests, kids, or office use.
5. Storage baskets in lieu of the perfect dresser; use these later for more clothes, in the bathroom, kids' toys, linens, etc.

Other great ideas? Tell us yours!

I would love a source for a tea table in the first picture. I have not found anything at flea markets or nor do I want to pay more than 80.00 for one. These were a dime a dozen when I was in Morocco for cheap. I would be perfect for my back patio.

My number 1 piece of advice: Don't buy just to buy.

Instead of wasting money on furniture you don't really want in order to fill a design void, just leave the space empty, for now. The space is waaaaay nicer than any "less than perfect" object you fill it with.

interim furniture just adds subconscious stress.

Beach chairs and cooler in lieu of sofa and coffee table. Just moved from NYC to Miami Beach and brought only loved and adored and or beautiful things with us.
The sofa didn't make the cut (kitty claws that used to shred my lovely couch can now be manicured on one of the many tropical trees in the yard!), but this is and was the perfect excuse to get rid of EVERYTHING that I was just holding on to for whatever reason. Major purge, but what a weight lifted.

Another suggestion: Look o Craigslist for free or cheap stuff. People are ditching tables, bookcases, and dressers all the time ... you'll have something functional, and you won't mind getting rid of it when you find (or can afford) something better later.

Second floor cushions and baskets (these always come in handy). Then your first piece of furniture could be a coffee table and you can hold off on buying a dining set for awhile.

But I'd suggest an air mattress instead of a futon, since you can just pack it away once you get a real bed.

We JUST moved a week ago... I wish we had floor cushions though. We only have our ikea POANG to sit on in the living room... and our bed in the bedroom, but no one wants to sit there all day.

console table.... just your basic run of the mill console table or something nicer if you find what you want but they're indispensable. dining table, kitchen island, computer desk, etc etc... the list just goes on. and when you're done with these harder working tasks then it can go sit along a wall and be completely useful there. it is definitely a piece that grows with you.

I made the tragic mistake of combining my belongings with my boyfriend (aka donating most of MY belongings). You know, the things that you have two of when you move in together... The dishes, the funky chair, the bed frame... Well imagine the look on my face when we break up two 5 months after moving in! I have embraced the fact that I now have less material items to hold me back. I am less cluttered than I would have been. I currently rent a room, but will be renting my own apartment next month. I know I will have alot of open space due to the fact that I no longer have any real furniture. I have book marked this article- and will be using every tip to make my new home functional while I search for my new belongings. Thank you!
