Julie's Entryway Makeover

2007-02-21-entry.jpg

Getting tired of gray days? Look at Julie's solution...she sent us this photo of her newly organized entryway. The email was titled "Wintertime blues turned tangerine dreams" and had this to say about her recent project:

"I got tired of the squishy messy snowy pile of shoes, boots, snowpants, dog leashes, jackets and hats that was constantly underfoot at the entryway to my 1,000 square foot Chicago-suburbs condo."

"As the first space you see when you enter my place, it was downright depressing. So, this weeeknds project: I brightened the space up with Behr Arizona, confined the shoes-not-in-current-use to clear boxes from The Container Store and installed colorful jacket etc. hanging hooks at kid-level. Now that weve conquered winter maybe spring will be here soon!"

Nice job, Julie! Tackling a weekend project like this is a great way to give your place a mid-winter boost, especially when it involves such a busy part of the home like the entryway. It must be such a treat to come in from the cold to a bright sunny spot and have a place to put everything. It's got us looking at the overflowing basket filled with bike helmets, mittens, hats and umbrellas by our door right now...

i love the orange walls.
also love that you thought outside the box and used those hooks that are marketed specifically for a dog leash but instead just used them as hooks for whatever. it's funny how so many of us get locked into using things only for the purposes that they have been marketed for.

anyway i have a bunch of these in a box because a) they were cheap and cute and b) i knew i could do something cool with them sooner or later. thanks for the inspiration!!!

I love the colors - the beautiful shade of orange is perfectly accented with cheerful and clean looking white baseboards and mouldings - nice work!

Looks like a great sunrise color, too! It must face east...

What are those hooks Julie? They look a little bit like those hanging monkey that interlock.

The hooks ARE dog butts! They are Ikea "Bastis" - only $1.99 each! Unfortunately you can't get them online so they require a trek to the big blue and yellow box but if you time it right it can be fun. Not for heavy stuff but perfect for kids jackets, hats and of course, dog leashes...

Hi Julie! Which way is the entry door?

posted by Mark on 2007-02-22 15:48:18

Mark, the entry door is to your left (which is, actually, East, tom mcg) as you look at the picture, the door on the right is the garage and you (as the picture taker) are on the stairs - it's an upstairs unit. Thanks for all the great comments, it was fun and now the challenge is keeping it looking as good as the picture (note the absence of all the aforementioned coats and snowpants and hats and general winter detritus a la decorator photo "as if" anyone really has an entryway this clean)...

in regards to the hooks... it's easy to think ikea just makes up a random combination of letters with umlauts for their names (which i'm not saying they don't), but in this case "bästis" is actually informal for "best friend". see, there's a little rhyme to their reason.... now "pöpli", on the other hand - show up to school with one of those pencils and you're branded for life.

love that adventure side of you Julie - great job on the weekend project, even better that you are willing to show it off! And where the heck is the leash??? :) Amy
