apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

The Beauty of Built-Ins

When it comes to organization and storage, built-ins are a definite bonus. Nestled inside a home's existing walls, they take away the problem of finding room for extra storage pieces. Even as a home evolves, their use can also change over the years...

A built-in cabinet can transform from a bookcase to a bar to a shoe shelf, depending on what kind of storage you need. For ideas, we've rounded up a few examples of functional built-ins from Apartment Therapy.

I love built-ins, and I love creating them for clients! Most often, I'll be adding book and media storage in a great room that coordinates with the new kitchen I'm designing.

Built-ins make a home feel more luxurious and more spacious.

I'd kill for built-in bookshelves, but fear they'd make my little place seem even smaller.

Built-ins really make a room look clean--these examples are great! The first photo of the bookcase sure looks sharp.
