This Week: Make The Seasonal Closet Switch

050409-dirtyclothes.jpg We snapped this photo on our recent visit to Chicago because it reminded us of a practice we had when we were younger. Each season when we packed up our winter accessories and apparel (which is what we did this weekend), we would slip a dollar bill in our coat pocket so it was a surprise when we pulled it back out of the closet 7 months later. Even though it was our own money, it still made us happy each and every time! Have you made the switch seasonal switch yet? Check out some closet organization tips and leave us your thoughts after the jump!

The weather in the midwest can be quite finicky, so for us, it always seems as if our winter clothes could be needed on short notice and wait until now to be packed away. It's always a great liberation from the weight that they bring to our closets and living spaces when they are about.

Even in a space that doesn't have closets per se, we still pack things up into our main storage area to lighten the load our main living area. Plus, it keeps extra dust and allergens off our winter gear during the long summer months.

I do that too! Sometimes I'll hide money, or sometimes I'll hide a pretty lipgloss, or other small "treat" for myself to find. It's like getting a present for no reason. Love it.

In Missouri, we could still get a cold snap into late April, so I have erred on the side of caution so far. I did think of doing the switchout this past weekend.

"per se" from the Latin, "by itself"

I think someone who did the dollar trick donated their jacket to Goodwill a few years ago, because I found one in a pocket when I bought it and got home! So, Thanks! ;^)

I don't have extra clothes. I only buy stuff I can wear year round, and so everything is in constant use, except maybe for a few accessories (vests, mainly) and a few things I save for dressing up. No surprises but less storage. (My winter coat is in the hall closet next to my spring jacket...)

I often find old kleenex in my pockets - does that count?

Whoa! What a concept. So you might not need your sandals in February, or your wool coat for going out at night in July? Maybe we ARE weird in San Francisco.

i agree on the kleenex! sometimes old receipts and ticket stubs. occassionally i'll find a feminine product... mostly its my purses that have all the junk- just moving from one bag to another!

About to make the switch and will have to spread the love with dollar bills everywhere. In NY, there's no getting around wearing the same kind of clothes year round. In the summer it's humid or you need to wear boots. Luckily, my storage facility is right near my apartment, so making the switch is relatively painless...as long as the storage space is organized, which it now is. (pats self on shoulder.)

I just opened my box of spring/summer clothes and decided I hate it all. So, I bought some new, cheap, trendy stuff that I won't feel bad about when I want to donate it after a year. I guess I'm just not great at picking out "classics" that I'll like forever.

I live in Indiana, and I made the switch last weekend. It was risky, but I decided I'd had enough! I'm sure we'll still have cool days, but I have enough pants and cardigans to survive. I doubt we'll have any more highs in the 30s.

For me, making the switch means storing my sweaters in two tubs under my bed, and exchanging them for sleeveless tops and skirts in my closet. I keep all my shoes in one location year-round, so those were already done.

I hide money for myself all the time. It's fun to find a twenty when you're not excpecting it... the only thing is that you have the temptation to take that 20 out of the pocket until you forget about it.

I'm intrigued as to why this sign was there at all. I do understand the sentiment, though.

After waking up one MAY morning and seeing 3 inches of SNOW outside my Grand Rapids apartment, I made a switch all right.

    I moved to Florida.

All sun. All flip-flops. All the time.

That's cute for a small child, but compound interest is more of a turn-on for me.

I live in central Florida. All I had to do is move a couple of sweaters to the back of the closet. No fun winter clothes here.

I live in the Northeast (north- northeast of NYC). I still haven't put away my winter clothes, but I have started making meaningful piles of wool sweaters. Today we are only in 50s, cloudy, rainy. I don't need woolens for that weather but I'm definitely wearing a pair of corduroys and my raincoat today (as opposed to a couple of weeks ago when it was 90 and I needed a summer skirt).

Every year the changeover seems to come later. I aim for Memorial Day weekend in Spring and Veterans Day in Fall (although by then I have had to pull jackets out of the back of the hall closet).
