Trash Cans at the Container Store

5-5-08trashcans.jpg

We made a trip to the Container Store this weekend for shelf liner and a new silverware tray. While we were there, we stopped to check out the trash cans, since they carry most of our favorites: SimpleHuman Fingerprint-Proof Trash Cans, Umbra's Artala Trash Cans, and the Umbra Metallica Cans. Although we've been dreaming of a SimpleHuman kitchen can for a while, we're thinking of going for the White Big Bin instead...

In this photo, the White Big Bins are on the right end of the front shelf. The tall, rectangular shape will fit perfectly in the narrow space next to our refrigerator, and we like the self-closing doors on top. The 15-gallon model is $69 - not cheap, but less expensive than the 10-gallon SimpleHuman models that start at $99. We also like the glossy white finish, which fits in better with our kitchen color plan than the silver SimpleHuman model.

Any first-hand reviews of the Big Bins?

I own a pair of the White Big Bins, and even though they are a sharp looking pair, I would not give them my highest regards. The self closing flaps on the lid have two small, fragile prongs that keep each flap in place. I dropped one of the lids while changing out the bag, and one of the prongs broke making the flap useless. :( Luckily I still had some plastic weld from my model making days back in school and was able to salvage the lid.

I do lust after those Simple Human trash cans! The white bins look cool, but they wouldn't go with my kitchen.

I like Simple Human stuff in general, but for the same function, I picked up an Arcosteel trash can at Target, and spent about half the money. It works great and looks nearly as good as the Simple Human model that costs twice as much.

i know the simple human bins are quite expensive, but i made the splurge in the fall for one and honestly it was worth it! i had one years ago that would get prints on it and it drove me nuts.

We bought a brabantia bin over 12 years ago. It was a kind of crazy idea for us to spend almost $100 for a trash bin. But it's still good looking and the open-close mechanism works smoothly just as when we bought. It was worth it.

No offense but I love my sterlite bin from the container store. It was $12, it has lasted forever, it has latches to hold a bag, and when it gets dirty I through it in the shower with a little dish detergent and it looks brand new.

Can't beat the Ikea Fniss for $1.99. It is great because it is small. The smaller the can, the more often I take out the trash, which is a good thing! This forces me to take out the trash once a day or, at most, every other day. While I line mine with a plastic bag, in case it ever does get dirty inside, it is easy to clean in the sink or bathtub.

I picked up a SimpleHuman (8 gallon round, with foot step) at Target a while back; much cheaper than the Container Store. I love it—kind of. While it's much better than the white one we used to have (they get dirty fast, and there's nothing grosser than a dirty garbage can) and it doesn't get fingerprints all over it.

Most of the SimpleHuman cans want you to use their proprietary bags for it, they're very narrow and you wind up going through more garbage bags quicker. If you use a standard Hefty garbage bag you're going to have a lot of excess bag. Once the can is full and you pull out the bag you'll find the bag is only about 1/2 full. Then you've got a garbage bag sitting on the floor until it's totally full and ready to go out. That's kind of annoying.

The other downfall is the pin that hinges the lid to the can is slightly bent and gets loose sometimes. But that's just a simple slide back into place.

But, it matches the kitchen, and looks neat without the standard bag overhang (hidden space inside for the excess bag), so it's certainly worth keeping around.
