apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

Trones Storage System from Ikea

7-23-07tronesshoestorage.jpg We live in one of those beautiful old Chicago apartments with high ceilings, intricate molding...and no closets. It's a real problem in the bedroom, where we need a place to store extra linens.

Under-the-bed storage won't work for us, so we're thinking about Trones Cabinets from Ikea ($39.99 for 3). They're wall-mounted and meant to store shoes, but we think they might work for blankets.

7-23-07donaldjuddprints.jpgWe're imagining them in white, displayed on the wall in with some breathing space between them a la Donald Judd.

Any thoughts or suggestions? Does anyone have the Trones Cabinets?

A friend used a bunch of Trones cabinets (in white) for clothes storage instead of a dresser. He liked how it allowed him to sort things out into smaller compartments instead of having to aggregate them into bigger drawers.

He had them mounted side-by-side, creating a ledge for displaying photos and other stuff.

Oooh, I like that. I was considering putting two Rakke dressers on either side of my bed, with a Jarpen shelf above at the same height at the dressers...but that would mean I wouldn't have a nightstand, which would depress me.

These wouldn't stick out so far into the room, which is nice, given that it's so small.

I used three white Trones pieces in my front hall closet: one holds gloves, one scarves, and one knit caps and hats. Works very well!

I just looked at this on the Ikea website but am slightly confused (and "talking" to Anna was a disaster!) - it says it holds 6 pairs of shoes and comes in a 3 pack, so does that mean each compartment holds 2 pairs of shoes?

kamillakatt: It really depends on how big your shoes are. A bin might hold just 2 pairs of men's size 12 running shoes, but fit 6-10 pairs of women's size 6 flats.

hitthosekeys - I'm obviously still waiting for the coffee to kick in - so the 3 pack could hold 18-30 pairs of women's size 6 flats?

I really don't think these would hold a blanket...maybe one per bin. That do have some great under-bed solutions (even though many of their beds are of the platform variety).

They are $70 per set in Sydney. Yea Gods - you get screwed living on the edge of the known universe.

Very helpful comments. Maybe they're too small to work for blankets, but we've got a few other closet-less spaces in the apartment where they could come in handy. Thanks for the advice, everyone.

I have a bunch of these. They'd work for a small blanket, probably not for a big fluffy king-size blanket. They're really better for holding shoes.

I had 3 of them mounted vertically near my front door in Downtown LA, with a 6" gap between each. I dumped incoming mail in them, and used the top of one of them to hold my keys, wallet, cell phone and charger. It was a neat setup.

In my new apartment I've mounted them to the inside of the closet door by the entry, and I'm using them as (surprise!) shoe cabinets. Much nicer than having to muck around on the closet floor to get to my shoes.

we rock them with socks, underwear, blankets, and undershirts - have 8 in all. if you have a deep closet, they are great to hand on the inside side walls - the just disappear into the wall and really provide great quick access.
