Back in June we talked about how to clear the dvd clutter that can be a side effect of having a small movie obsession like we do. Our idea worked brilliantly until the credenza holding our dvds, found a new home at the garage sale we held just before moving in November. Click through the jump to see how we stored 500+ dvds out of sight and out of mind in our new space!

Our credenza has 3 doors, and 6 shelves total. On 4 of those shelves we used these leather trays from Target which when turned and put in on their side, hold three rows of dvd's brilliantly.
On the other two shelves, we needed room for the accessories that go with our gaming consoles. So instead of the trays, we mixed it up and used red fabric bins from Itso (also from trusty Target). They are fantastic little creations. Check them out of you haven't seen them yet.
Overall we are excited about everything fitting into our credenza and we haven't looked back since we ditched our dvd cases. In fact our box sets are almost frustrating since they don't have the same clean aesthetic that the slim line jewel cases do. We are pleased with our decision to make the jump to new slimmer cases and don't really miss the artwork on the box, or the extra space they took up.
Have you made the switch to something trimmer than a standard dvd box? Leave us a comment below and let us know!
Great use of space, simple organization and a nice clean sideboard to boot - I like!

My boyfriend have been converting some of our DVD's into AppleTV format, and storing them on the iMac - although we'll need more space soon and will store them on a hard drive. Although, he's still partial to his blu-ray disks for

... for some reason (left that out, oops!)

I use those same leather-ish (im not sure they are real) for organizing my desk, keeps things looking a lot nicer and less cluttered.
I also have a lot of the itso storage stuff (about 8 pieces) as an entertainment center. It looks really great for the price and versatility and is a great solution for storing DVDs, media, and other livingroom junk! When I can afford something nicer I have resolved I can break it down into a few smaller storage pieces, which is great as well.

like the above, we've gone digital and converted all movies to quicktime files via the mac application "handbrake". saved at a high-enough bitrate, it's indistinguishable from the original 720p source on our 1080p TV (run through an upscaling receiver). we've every movie (and album) we've ever owned on a 1TB ($150) harddrive and we play them through the mac-mini already connected to the set... we do back-up as well...

We use cd wallets to store DVD's and toss the cases that they came in. Each of us gets a different color. If we get more DVD's we get another wallet. That way we can easily bring movies to friends houses without having to deal with the clunky cases.

We juuust did this last night! We had an over run of movies in our tv credenza and we got a nice wallet book that goes on a shelf and got rid of all the cases. We had done this long ago with music cds I don't know why we waited so long for our movies. And, we will start putting them on hard drives for our media computer, too. Also, most of the cases are recycle-able!

Symbollalala- Each time my husband and I have de-cased another round of movies, I have listed the cases on Craigslist. Within 2 hours I have had takers on them each time! Also, check with your local library, often times people lose the case to one they rented and they have needed them a few times as well!

weve got two huge cd books, one for music and the other for movies.. one of these days im sure ill up-grade to a few more attractive books but for now what ive got works. we do keep the cd, dvd, and blueray cases and cover art in boxes in our too-small closets, though.

We have a few terabytes of space that we use to store all of our movies & television shows (and music). We put together a media center (computer in a special case that runs a media center program) that is in our living room & networked to our server & all other computers. It grabs what we need & works with a TV remote. We don't own one single shelf, box, or piece of furniture for storing media & we LOVE it.

I'm still very visual, and didn't want to get rid of the cover art, but we did opt for the slim (but full height) DVD cases, and trimmed the cover art to fit. Cut down our space by half.
Love the credenza.. need some more photos of the new loft!

I have my movies in one of those huge cd-albums, fits perfectly but, as you said, inconvenient when I add more. Especially so because I tend to buy movies when they're discounted or in some kind of combination sale (like yesterday, 5 movies for 10 euros) so I have to move a lot to get them in alphabetically.
I am now considering using spindles. Especially for box sets as they can fit multiple seasons. I'd keep the boxes but store those someplace else, maybe in the attic. And when used for regular movies, it's easier to add to it.

I like my 500 movies being on display, but this is a great idea for those living in small spaces - very organized too!
