Taking Your Style with You

071408chairs.jpgWe made the brave Metra journey out to Ravinia (a local outdoor concert venue) on Friday night. For those that haven't done this recently or ever, expect full trains to pass you by, standing room only once you finally get on, and lots and lots of drunk people on the way back into the city. Once at the park, we saw many (as expected) Crate & Barrel tables in a bag but also the more unexpected in traveling decor:

dozens of modern candelabras, creative centerpieces, blankets we wouldn't necessarily want on the ground, and great looking modern chairs.

Although we keep things simple with a grungy blanket and wine only, we loved that others really bring their style along with them.

How far are you willing to take your style to an outdoor event (lug it along, squeeze through crowds, hope you have enough space for all you've brought, etc.)? Tell us about your hottest item that you love setting up away from home.

I have a blue quilt that comes with us to the beach every weekend, and occasionally makes picnic/concert/fireworks appearances as well. One of my most beloved and most used yard sale purchases - replete with happy memories.

Ah the Ravina....I went with my fiancee's whole family to see Tony Bennett last year and was also amazed at the lovely centerpc/candelabra sightings. We had the normal folding camping chairs, a cooler and a few blankets for the 10 of us. Well that and some awesome food and wine.

We always go on the train and i refuse to haul anything with me that doesn't fit into a backpack. Last time we went, we took nothing but a grungy blanket, picnic food in our tiffin and a couple of bottles of mineral water. I love to bring our tiffin to picnics.

I think a lot of people with the elaborate set ups are getting there by car. It's really a pain to deal with a lot of stuff if you're on the train.

I went to Feist as well and noticed the plethora of the Crate and Barrel Ravinia tables. After this experience, my first at Ravinia, I will keep my outdoor music picnicking to Milennium Park, which provides a FAR superior experience, both sound, space and crowd-wise! The Metra ride there and back was horrific for a variety of reasons and the sound system at the lawn was far from "state of the art".

I dragged my incredibly heavy picnic gear (bottle of wine and 2 large tupperwares of food, plus blanket and soft coolers) to work in the morning and to the Metra train from work, which was probably pretty comical for anyone watching me. My coworker asked me if I was "running away."

I was also at Fiest, and I think that the real problem was with the people. There were way to many drunk and loud people out there. Some guys came and sat in front of me and were drinking modelo cans andd pissing in the bush next to me. The sound system is not State of the Art, but it is really good. Did you know Ravinia has really great bathrooms??? Anyways, I did notice a lot more people there that were just partying and obviously not listening to the music one bit... in fact the people in front of me even made a comment about how they came all this way on the metra and forgot about the music 3/4 of the way through the concert! I picked up and left. Most shows are a lot better... this show just seemed to attract diifernt people. I loved!!! Matisyahu. That was a good show.

Sorry, but this post was very unclear...I had no idea what you were talking about.

I think I figured out that you went to a open air concert (which must be a regular event) in the park - and were surprised to find folks bringing regular furniture with them rather than camp chairs and blankets.
Am I caught up?

Starting to read the entry - not knowing what Ravina is - I thought you were going to a flea market or something and you were showing us the great variety of chairs available there.

So is the picture provided in the post - the chairs that were at the park? Funny not a single person is sitting in them or milling around. Unanimous bathroom break?

I don't want to sound snotty here - but this post was really hard to follow if you are not from the area you are talking about - and look at your readership... we're all over the country.

clickchick: i hope the post is a bit clearer now. yes, Ravinia is a local spot near Chicago for outdoor concerts. I did not take any pics at the event. Rather, the top image (as was listed below the jump) is from Atomic Ranch, which I used to illustrate the real point of the post: taking your indoor style outside and away from home.

Heather,

Yes, much better. I don't mean to be complain-y.

After a career writing for television news - I'm trained to write to be understood on the first pass.

While I try not to expect that of everyone - it sort of felt like I came in halfway through a conversation in which your topic was an aside. I wouldn't know what you were talking about unless I was familiar with your area, your entertainment habits, and your personal short-hand.

I think web writing is very similar to television news. People are only paying 1/2 attention - and you have to start at the beginning even when it seems most of your audience would know the background.

Thanks!

clickchick -

i'm in charleston - a far cry from chicago and i managed just fine understanding the post.

"We made the brave Metra journey out to Ravinia (a local outdoor concert venue) on Friday night...Once at the park, we saw many (as expected) Crate & Barrel tables in a bag but also the more unexpected in traveling decor: dozens of modern candelabras, creative centerpieces, blankets we wouldn't necessarily want on the ground, and great looking modern chairs."

how is that not clear?!

What you quoted is clear because it is rewritten from the verbiage that was orginally posted... which WAS unclear.
