Check with your insurance company first. We recently bought an apartment building with a garage deck and had to remove the deck and the bridge due to potential liability issues.

I used to live in a building like that in Lincoln Park. Planters, grills and such were explicitly not allowed on the back porch areas because they were fire hazards.
