Garages are often overlooked as a possible spot for a garden or deck, but if you've got a flat-topped garage you've also got a potential outdoor room. This 3-car garage has a big enough surface to create a communal outdoor area for the whole building...
Each apartment gets its own balcony, but they all connect to the garage roof deck via a bridge. Red-painted railings tie the whole system together. The garage deck provides space for barbecues and outdoor dining, and a stack of chairs offers extra seating for large groups of people. In case you're considering your own garage-top garden, here are a few resources:

Check with your insurance company first. We recently bought an apartment building with a garage deck and had to remove the deck and the bridge due to potential liability issues.

I used to live in a building like that in Lincoln Park. Planters, grills and such were explicitly not allowed on the back porch areas because they were fire hazards.
