If you have a hand drill, forget the tedious hand brushing! Just buy a drill-mount wire brush cup (less than $10) and you'll be done in a tenth of the time. And you'll take off far more of the rust than you can by hand. With a little patience you can go right back down to bare metal, which is surprisingly beautiful when wire brushed.
