My Great Outdoors: Jane's Urban "Backyard" Escape
Montreal

0602_jane01.jpg
2009greatoutdoorsbadge.gifName: Jane, her husband, and three children
Location: Montreal
Type of space: deck and rooftop
How did they do it?: Jane and her husband did it all themselves, building everything from the deck to the rooftop planting beds.

The deck was built onto the corner of the house, just off of the top-floor family room. It's an extension of the interior space and provides a place to eat outdoors. The deck's location is perfect for the family, as it overlooks their favorite view from the house: the church steeples in the distance.

Jane collects stones from cottage weekends and treasures the naturally heart-shaped and egg-shaped ones she has found, in photos 6 and 7.

(Thanks, Jane!)

Great job--I can't believe you built that balcony/deck by yourselves!

It'll be magical when everything gets growing really well...nicely done!
You probably already know this, but if you want leafy vines that will grow along fences, railings, etc. really quickly, my mom often uses scarlet runner beans. They're actually kind of pretty!

Something about this photo makes it look like a model, is it just me?
