My Great Outdoors: Melodie's Containers and Edibles

2009greatoutdoorsbadge.gifName: Melodie Hough
Location: Lawrence, Kansas
Type of space: backyard container gardens

Melodie's backyard gardening comes in bursts - containers sprinkle the back patio, hang from the fence, line the walkway. The containers hold colorful flowers and thriving green plants. Among them, many of the plantings are edible...

How did you create it?: Small containers are planted with edibles like herbs, lettuce, and pansies. Yes, you can eat the pansies - I used the them to make crystallized flowers for a cake on Mother's Day. One other edible garden is my "beer garden" (photo 8). My summer project is a stone fire pit, which is going to encompass a large flower garden in the corner of the yard (that's the rock for it pictured with my dog, Willow).

Recommended store, site, product or resource? Sunrise Garden Center: All the edible plants are from Sunrise. Most of the other flowers were from there, too, as well as the three identical pots along the front walkway. The thee pots hanging on the fence are scored from Hobby Lobby clearance! The rock for the future fire pit was free. It's recycled from a place that was tearing down some landscaping and they weren't going to reuse it. I took it off their hands and they delivered it to me, all for free. (thanks, Melodie!)

Lawrence rocks! Nice edible garden. Has anyone tried to grow spinach from a pot?
