apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

Outdoor Inspiration: Guerrilla Gardening in Athens, Greece

One of the first things we learned during our two week stay in Greece: "There are almost no parks and green spaces in Athens" (in the words of our Athens-born friend and resident). On our first full day, we headed to the University area for an amazing lunch (sardines, artichokes with peas and carrots, rabbit with potatoes and lemon) and coffee. Across from the cafe was this lot, which our friend told us had recently been taken over (unofficially) by residents who wanted a park, rather than the planned new construction or parking lot...

One constant we heard throughout our stay in Athens: Residents feel their city is not beautiful, not green, and the one thing they long for is more parks. Especially for those living in small apartments without gardens, as most residents do, we agree that city parks should be a right, not a privilege. By taking this lot into their own hands, the neighbors gave a somewhat crumbling and rundown area more beauty, life, and room to breathe.

Keep an eye out for a lot more inspiration from our two weeks in Greece...

Can't imagine living without nature. I don't think human beings were meant to. Way to go guys!

It's sad that people in such an ancient city that stands for so much have to live without parks. Hey, people, rise up and take back more of your birthright! Good luck!
