Bathroom Color Choice: What Do You Think?

unpaintedbathroom091008.jpgI saw my friend Evan at a wedding last weekend and he asked my opinion on what color to paint the bathroom he's been renovating - my first reaction: navy blue. I like its contrast with white, it feels very modern to me these days and I know Evan likes color, so he can handle a bold choice. He did a bunch of photoshop mock-ups and sent them to me and now I'm sharing them with all of you...which color would you choose? Jump below to check out all the options...

I like what it currently is. Looks light, fresh, and clean - things I associate with a bathroom. I'm usually not thinking "bold" when using the bathroom. If you want to add color, it is extraordinarily easy to do so in the bathroom with bath linens/accessories. But a crisp, light color gives you a great basis to work with.

I like the brown the most. If that wasn't a choice, I'd go with one of the darker blues. Pink can look really nice in bathrooms, too, but I don't really like that shade pictured and the color tends to be something that you really need to commit to.

In any case, I hope Evan's able to decide on something that he truly loves!

I like the third picture (denim blue) and the 5th (the brighter red). Both are beautiful.

They're all so dark. I don't find them modern. The best is the clean white that it already is. I guess if I had to choose one the first one is kind of interesting--what is it, a pinkish color? But white is by far the best option, especially for a small dim space like that, and if I wanted a color I'd use a pale, lettuce green or something. Or even a very pale blue. Again, white trumps all when it comes to bathrooms. Unless you're going to put some nice mosaic-type tiles....

The space is soooo small -- I don't like any of the color options. Keep it light and bright to maximize an airy feeling in a tight space.

Since it's such a small space I would not recommend a dark, overpowering color. Perhaps painting just one wall and using accessories, such as towels and art work, for added accents. I think the brown or the denim work the best in the small space, possibly even the red.

The last two pictures have three to four colors. I would say stick to two colors (possibly a third if that color is the main one), especially in a room that small.

It depends on what the rest of the house looks like. I like what is there now and think that the best thing to do might be to just add brown accents (towels, art, etc.) to complement the brown granite countertop that is there already.

But if Evan is bound and determined to paint, I'd go with a brown because of the countertop and start with painting just one wall (and in a lighter color than shown above). No point in overdoing it. Go slow and see if minimal changes accomplish the look he is after. He can always add more dramatic changes later if he wants to.

All those choices are really really dark and make me sad to think that such a bright and airy bathroom can be turned into something dark and dingy with the wrong choice of paint.

I'm with you on navy blue -- although i would use it as an accent or border somehow... kind of like a sail:

(this pic looks more like black than navy, but you get the point)

Or those choices, I like the brown.
With a bunch of clean white towels....and maybe a framed art print that had some apple green in it.

My initial reaction was a very pale grey.

I like the darker red, throw a few candles in there and some great towels etc. Anywhooooooooo, good luck Evan with whatever color you choose and remember as designers say "it's only paint"

I like the second down on the right. It looks like a medium neutral brown. the other colors highlight the outdated fixtures, while the brown ties it together.

Considering the size of the bathroom, I would go with a powder greyish blue, powder blue, or a fresher coat of the current color (or is it a shade of white)? Wainscoating on the bottom half of the walls would also add lots of sophistication for not so much dough, and would compliment the light fixute in creating a classy yet comfy and somewhat modern air to the space. Good luck!

I think they are all too dark, and would recommend a very pale blue or grey. But of these choices, I'd go with #3 as it's the closest to a true navy.

I've got a tiny bath also and just went from the darker blue I had painted it years ago to all crisp bright white ~ what a relief it is to go in there now! The darker colors made it seem like a cave. Now it's bright and airy. And if I get bored I can change the whole look with just a new shower curtain and accessories.

I don't like any of them because of the brown granite-y counter. I'd almost keep it white or just paint the back wall and window area and not next to the sink/vanity. Maybe if he installed the "natural light" light bulbs or the ones with the pink tint it might help, but the lighting is too yellow now.

I actually don't see anything modern about this bathroom, it's very traditional to me. I also agree that white would be the best choice, though it's all about what buddy Evan prefers.

I think lighter colors should be considered as well (tan, cream, linen white, etc). I'm not a big fan of saturated wall colors.

I'm an interior designer, not that that really matters, but
I think that b/c of the brown countertop, he should go with the dark chocolate, or navy. No two tones though in a bath.
Too small.

Also-make sure the paint finish is high-or at the least semi-gloss. It looks nicer in a smaller space and will make your paint last longer in the moisture.

I also think he should consider a warm gray. They look lovely with cherry wood tones.

By all means, go with a pale color. Choose a color you like on a palet then go one or two shades lighter and you'll end up with the color you desire. I think I join a majority when saying: "Go with something subtle!"

Geez - This isn't the "Before Renovating" picture?

That wall unnecessarily chops up the room, and I just know the toilet is right next to the door. Evan sure missed the opportunity to rearrange the plumbing and make the room right.

That said, I'd leave it white - no sense making it look any more chopped up than it already is.

I am completely digging the pink/magenta color; although I would totally find a way to get more light into that bathroom. Mirrors or uplights! Get it done ;)

I agree with those who said this bathroom looks anything BUT modern -- it looks very traditional. Absolutely not modern. I don't think that's a bad thing if it's what Evan wants, but if he's going for "modern", these dark colors are just going to take the bathroom in the opposite direction. Frankly, I think they all make the bathroom look very dated, and draw attention to the negative aspects of the bathroom (small size, light fixtures, partial wall) -- while distracting from the positive points (clean, natural light, new fixtures).

I would look into very pale colors; grays, creams, whites. I would also paint that strip of wood at the top of the partial wall, which will make it less of a focal point.

I'm all for color, but how about a bright one? Almost anything -- hot pink, acid green, orange, turquoise, chartreuse.

It might just be the exposure of the photo, but I like the red best. It's bold without being too dark. The dark blue makes the room seem closed in to me.

I painted my last bathroom an even darker blue, more of an inky midnight blue, and high gloss. The ceiling was metallic silver. It was gorgeous, like the inside of a jewelry box! No need to be afraid of dark, saturated colours in small spaces. {and my bathroom was smaller than this one!} :)

I agree with posts above about keeping it light.

Also not sure I'd add that wood trim on top of the wall --makes it look a lot less modern. And I prefer the chrome lamps to the brass he has in the Photoshopped files.

I think there's a difference between small, and very cramped. That's a very cramped bathroom and would do better with light, airy colors.

I'd go with a light, light blue or stay with the while. Maybe a new coat or two of white, something slightly less cream coloured, although it may be the sunlight that I am seeing on the paint that makes it cream coloured.

How did you get rid of that pipe for the cord for the ceiling light?
Remember the darker the wall the harder it is to see yourself in the mirrors---esp. the shape of your hair cut if you have dark hair---I'm talking about the wall behind your head when looking into the mirror.

I like the white---would add a black greek-key design along the wall at the ceiling and perhaps paint the ceiling a pale gray. Then pick up black and gray throughout the room. Black and gray towels and tissue box---etc.
Get ride of the pipe to the light fixture if you can!
Paint a black trim along the top of the gray marble sink top(on the wall) about 4 inches. Perhaps a black and white or gray and white or black and gray window pull down shade---do it your self with spray paint and masking tape. Hard to say what to do without being there to see all the details.
I really do not like any of those after photos for this bath.

NO! Those colors are too much for a tiny skinny bathroom.

Just paint the wall around the window whatever color you like, but leave the rest shiny white.

I find all these options too dark and, well, intimidating, for this small space. I'd go for a very pale blue and then only paint the bottom half of the walls and leave the top white. Additional colour could then be added by linens and such.

The brown looks great. I would avoid the bright pink, especially in the small space - I had a friend with a similar color bathroom where the pink would glow in the sunlight and really distort the look of your skintone in the mirror. Made it really hard to do your makeup!

I would like to see the deep chocolate brown on the half wall by the sink, and then either a cafe au lait kind of pale brown on the rest of the walls. Another option would be a light greyed blue like November Skies instead of the tan. All dark is too much in there, emphasises the narrowness and too abruptly cuts off the shower which appears to have a lighter stone or tile.
Towels in the buff color of the shower facing material.

If I have to choose one, I would go with the lighter blue......and no contrasting walls......but I, also, think that the space is too small for any of the darker, deeper tones......I would choose something much lighter....if the whites and eggshells are not for you, how about a pale gray or a soft sage-ish green?......I think it feels claustrophobic with the dark colors.
