apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

It's all Black & White in the Bathroom

bwbath1.JPGSince it's bathroom month, we took a close look at our own. In a bathroom of small proportions with an unattractive, almost-white radiator taking up precious space, we decided that since we couldn't hide it, we may as well focus on it.

Using simple materials (a can of glossy black spray paint and two large pieces of cardboard to protect the wall and floor), our chipped up, in-the-way necessity became a much more attractive object and heating source. Now the black diamonds on the floor tiles pop and the glossy black makes things seem cleaner than the old "white."

This small bathroom also has a large side wall, with the impossibility (think knocking your head) of adding functional shelving. We had an old full-length mirror from Target, with no use for it in the bedroom. Since the wall was not only tall, but also unusually wide, we flipped the typically vertical mirror on its side, and a larger, more reflective bathroom was born.

I always like black and white bathrooms!

If you really need storage in your Bathroom, I've had friends who put one shelf in along a wall (or walls)in their bathrooms that were only about 12-14 inches down from the ceiling. Their ceilings weren't that high but the shelf still rested across the top of the door frame and didnt make the room feel claustrophobic to me at all. It's a great way to store things you dont need all the time..extra towels, rolled or folded to look nice, extra toiletries in baskets..maybe also spray painted b&w to fit your theme...etc. Add your choice of fun stuff to dress it up..and it can be attractive and very useful storage.

Done in black (at least to my eye) the radiator now offers an attractive sense of 'sculpture' and truly does compliment the black diamond tiles beautifully. Bravo!

I agree. Very well-done! I'd love to see pics of the rest of the room to see how it all ties in. The up-high mirror's a great idea.
