We love the bright orange backsplash in Lisa and Jeremie's Parisian Open Space, one of our Small Cool 2009 contestants. In their gray and white kitchen, it adds some colorful balance. If you've got a basic drywall backsplash at home, it doesn't take much work to get the same effect...
How to Paint the Backsplash:
- Choose your color and finish. Since backsplashes can get messy, we recommend using a finish that's easy to clean, like a semigloss, or covering a matte finish with a clear layer of protective varnish or glass.
- Clear your counters and take down any hardware (like utensil racks or hooks) from your kitchen wall.
- Use painter's tape to protect the edges of your counters and cabinets, sectioning off the area you'll paint.
- Use a brush to cut in corners. Make sure to cover the small cracks that show between the stove and the counter.
- For a smooth finish, use a small roller to cover larger areas. This is especially important if you're using a semigloss paint, since glossy finishes show brushstrokes more than matte.

when i first saw this, i thought it was some kind of an acrylic surface. does anybody have any tips for a solid peice of colored acrylic for a backsplash? i have seen the glass backsplash, but i'm thinking i could install some kind of acrylic by myself. any tips?

I'd love to do this in my kitchen- but I've got a pesky little 3" laminate backsplash curling up from the counter. It'd look too weird I think.
