Ten Years Later: A Good Gift

1103_tools01.jpg

Using the toolkit pictured above over the weekend, I remembered it was a gift from my uncle from over ten years ago. Wondering if it was still available, I gave it a quick Google...

...and found it at Amazon. I remember when I received it years ago, it was nice enough. I was in architecture studio and I knew some of the hand tools could come in handy.

Fast forward ten years later and the gift is more valuable than I initially realized. It's made by Rubbermaid and the handles all have a little give that makes them easy to grip and comfortable on the hands. The zipper bag has stowed away easily in small apartments and it's my go-to for simple DIY home repairs.

Given all of the times I've used this gift over the years, I hadn't really thought back on where it came from until it randomly popped into my head whilst using the screwdriver on Saturday. For so many years of a solid household toolkit, I thank you Uncle Bill!

This is such a good gift for kids going off to college and/or moving into their first place. Thanks for the reminder! (I think I'll call my dad tonight and thank him again for the tool set he gave me 15 years ago!)

My dad gave me a Durabilt tool set from Kmart when I graduated from college and moved out of state. I've taken it with me on many moves because it's so compact. I usually just tuck it under the car seat.

For Christmas one year my dad gave me the same thing, except the tools had a flower pattern (at least he was trying). I wasn't too happy with the gift at the time but years later I still have the tools and am thankful for such a useful gift.

my mother bought me a small tool box and the basic tools one needs for basic repairs/improvements when I moved away for college. I readily admit to being pretty clueless when it comes to these things, so was not that impressed with the gift at the time...but, time has shown again and again how handy those simple tools have been. These days it is still the "go-to" box in the house despite the fact that my husband has a whole barn full of tools.

OH! and another great gift (also from mom) was an emergency kit for the car. I have yet to use the safety flares, but have found that a flashlight with extra batteries has come in handy on more than one occasion. :)

I have a similar kit that served as my primary tools for a few years. I have since replaced with a better (and more comprehensive) set of Craftsman (still growing), but the little kit now lives in my classroom where it gets as much use as ever.

tool kits are wonderful gifts! my dad just gave my husband and I a toolkit of some of his old tools and new ones too.
we kept using our neighbors tools all the time so he thought we needed some of our own.

I received a kit like this from my dad when I went away to college, I still use it at least weekly. Thanks, Dad!
