In the past I've been known to do some DVD yoga in the living room , but lately, I'm boxing away every morning using the Wii Fit. It's REALLY fun and quite motivating...

It's quickly changed our morning routine to something a bit healthier and has us thinking about exercise at home in a new way. It simply just occurs to me to take a 10 minute blogging break to do some yoga stretches (or the already mentioned super fun boxing workout) now that I have the Wii Fit system to keep track of my efforts, racking up the fitness minutes in the Wii-based bank. I'm a fan.
How about you? Anyone else out there also enjoying Wii Fit? OR, if you do non-Nintendo exercise at home (on a fitness machine, with a dvd or simply on your own steam) let us know....

i want one of these sooo bad. i tried it out at my friends house the other day. i would probably do it for hours and hours a day.

I've had a lifelong ban on video games in my house, but this is making me reconsider.
However, I have always worked out at home using a bike in winter and yoga/pilates dvds year round--though with varying results in the consistency department. Could you elaborate on how the Wii is better (i.e., the tracking it does, etc.)? I am not a "class person" so getting the feedback from the computer is really appealing.

I heart my wii fit.
My husband and I had a debate. Five months gym membership or a wii plus wii fit.
We went with the wii fit as at the end of five months of gym membership we may well have wasted our money (i.e not going) but the end of five months regardless if we were any fitter we'd still have have our wii!!!
That said I'm exercising almost everyday. Something I have NEVER done before. It's extremely motivating and super fun. I definitely recommend!

I'm totally getting wii fit too! I was so excited when it came out, now I'm just waiting to splurge on it for my birthday.
I've belonged to various gyms most of my adult life ... sometimes I go frequently, sometimes I go months without stepping foot in there. Now that I got an elliptical machine at home, I not only find myself looking forward to my morning workout on it, but I also walk to and from the subway (instead of taking the bus), and do yoga and/or crunches, etc. in the evening. So I guess I'm finding out the whole dread of the gym is less about not wanting to work out and more of just not wanting to waste time going there.
Can't wait for wii fit!

I can't find Wii Fit anywhere. My Wii gets no use except for Dr. Mario, but I think Wii Fit would get me off my butt and on the Wii more.

I tried a friend's wii fit on Monday...today's Thursday and I'm still sore! That's a real work-out. It's on my wish list.

Oh and to answer your question ValHalla. It tracks your progress by weighing you everyday giving you your BMI. Doing balance tests to check your core stability progress and at the end of the test giving you a 'wii fit age'. Your actual age compared to your fitness age. (the first day on I was ten years older, I'm now after a week one year younger!)
Also the better you get at certain exercise you unlock advanced levels, increased repetitions and new games!
My 60 year old mother is so impressed she's considering buying one instead of a cross trainer.
P.S I don't work for Nintendo!!!

i've been curious about the wii fit for some time now...
does it actually compare to a gym workout? meaning, can you actually break a sweat or get in a decent cardio workout on this thing?
if so, i'm in!
view boomtown!'s profile
I really want to get one. We already have a wii and I love the physical games like Sports and WarioWare etc. The balance board opens up so many new options for game types, but the fitness aspect really makes me excited.
I'll have to save up and buy one!

It's starting to get really hard to resist this thing...
I have a gym membership and I haven't gone in months because it's really not that fun. I really do dislike video games, but if this would actually get me working out, then I don't know.

oh my god, the hula-hoop game left me sore for days. so awesome, I am wanting my own so bad.

If this could provide a good workout comparable to a decent yoga DVD, i'm getting one.
The nice thing about the Wii fit is that more "games" will come out on it as well. :D

Boomtown, I find that I do actually sweat with the wiifit if I put the effort in to doing it. My son figured out that for the running game he could just shake his remote up and down and not have to run... he's 5 though so he gets points for creativity.
There's a free mode of step aerobics where the wiimote acts as a metronome and talks to you every now and then. You do your steps in time to the wiimote, it keeps track of how many you did, but you can watch tv while you're doing it. Ditto with the freestyle running.
I also liked how on the yoga, I get a bit more feed back on if I'm doing a pose correctly and how stable I am while I do it. Way more feed back then a video. As an added bonus, it'll tell you what yoga and strength games work well when you do them in the same day. Also, the trainer is nice. It's almost like actually working out with someone without having to let someone see me attempt to do the poses.
I also like that it tracks my weight and BMI.
I do have a few problems with the wiifit though. It doesn't have a way to measure your true bmi, it goes by the chart for height and weight. It also doesn't account for women that are... top heavy. So my center of balance seems to always be wrong on certain games. I do the pose correctly, but my top is just heavier then it should be.
As part of the not knowing your true bmi, I don't let my kids do the body test every day. It's not accurate for growing kids and I don't need them thinking they're weight is bad. Neither child is overweight, but it's only accurate if their height is accurate. They're growing boys, their height changes often.
Love the wii fit though and I do use it often.... unlike the exercise videos I've bought over the years.

i have a wii, but i use yourself fitness on ps2 for exercise. it's a real workout and customizable, and it also tracks your fitness level. i've been doing it for a couple years now, 3-5 times a week for a half hour a day, and i love it.

I've been wanting to get a Wii for a long time...ever since I heard about Wii Fit long before it was released. Playing other games on the Wii is a workout as well, but this would be great. But since I don't have a console yet, I'll thank squiggle for the tip about YourselfFitness. I had looked into the program before, but they weren't offering it for PS2 yet. Now that they are, I'm going to get it. And I'll get the Wii later.

I LOVE the WiiFit! I didn't think it was going to be nearly this fun! My only complaint--that evil little computer SPIES on you! It was asking me if I thought my roommate had lost/gained weight and then it asked her why I hadn't been using it for a while. It also admits that it's normal for your weight to fluctuate about 2lbs in a day, but then asks you to explain *any* weight gain (*gasp* .2 lbs! OH NO!). Overall I think it's pretty fun, I just wish you could opt out of having the computer turn into your babysitter.
The boxing game that comes with the system is better than boxing on the WiiFit though.

I love the Wii Fit. I think it is great to improve your balance. It is so much fun. I would not go as far as saying that you can get in shape with the Wii Fit.
My body age is always many years younger than I am. Even with my knee recovering form the surgery, my stats on average are even better than my husband :-)
I do exercises every day at home: bike, mat exercises, gym ball and a Bosu to build more balance. I used to do yoga but I stopped due to a ski accident. I will go back eventually once my knee has fully recovered.
I joined a gym because I need to for my recovery. But I do not like doing exercises in a crowded room. A few years ago, my girlfriends decided to do our gym sessions together. We thought it would encourage each others to stick to our plan. It lasted 4-5 months. Once the first girl could not make it, we slowly start making excuses.
I prefer doing exercises at home because I can do it between blogging.

Really? Is it THAT good? I just may have to look into getting one.

We love ours, glad my husband reserved it since they are hard to find. It motivated us to eat better and work out everyday. And you can get creative with some of the "free workouts" like using 3lbs dumbbells while free walk or step it gives u more of a workout. I love doing step while watching the news in the morning, it makes it less boring. I am definitely sore!

I'm not really interested in having a game system in my house. I use Hip Hop Abs DVDs. I bought them from an infomercial. They RULE! I get better workouts than I ever did at the gym. So fun, too!

I really want one. I've been calling about 7 different retail stores in the bay area twice a day (half of them have shipments typically in the morning and afternoon) and have only found one store that got them in. I drove over there as soon as he told me he had one and by the time I got there they had sold out. They sold out 20 minutes after receiving 4 of them (I called about 5 mins after and it took me a little over 15 minutes to get there). I'm going to stake out a gamestop on my day off tomorrow to try and get one. They are awesome! Can't wait till I get my own, I even bought the wii specifically for it.

squiggle, Where did you get your Yourself! Fittness? I called a couple of places and they haven't even really heard of them. I read about it and I think I want one... Thanks

The wii sports boxing is enough workout for me. Still i really want a wii fit.
view kollros's profile
I'm not interested in one either. I have a treadmill and that's enough for me and my husband swims at a health club (as swimming really is the best exercise).
I think that the novelty of the Wii Fit will wear off eventually and it'll become just as uninteresting as other forms of exercise. Everything eventually transitions into the mundane once the newness wears off and all technology is eventually replaced with better tech. I'm not wasting money on the newest fad then having to junk it when something "better" comes along.

i bought my copy of yourself fitness on amazon.com. i just checked and the price of new copies has gone up a lot! but they do still have some used copies available.
by the way, this comparison of yf and wiifit is pretty good. yf does let you choose workout lengths of 15, 30, or 45 minutes, and does have yoga. i'm positive that wiifit is much more fun, but i think yf gives a much better workout.

I like the idea of the Wii and Wii fit but just can't change my opinion on video games.... I think they are toxic. On the other hand, if it is motivating some couch potatoes to get up and move before their behinds melt into the couch and their bodies atrophy... then kudos.
Personally, no game could ever replace sunshine and fresh air on a bike ride outside, or my lunch break gym routine (so much more enjoyable than going after work with the crowds!)

OK, so I'm a video game dummy. I don't have a tv... I use my computer to watch dvds, access online video, etc. Could I hook up the Wii and Wii fit to my computer? This does look very appealing, but not if I also have to buy a television set.

I don't have Wii Fit (they're still sold out at Game Stop). However, I am an avid Wii Boxer and Golfer.
Always wear the strap.
I have a gym membership, but I also periodically do DVD's at home and stream yoga classes from http://www.yogatoday.com.

i am a 44 year old , 220 pound woman who hates to work out..tried the gym, curves, DvD's and did not like any of them.....Last week i bought the Wii and the wii fit game and absolutely love it.......I work out everyday on it and absolutely love the aerobics....i start out at the top and work my way down the list in all categories......so far im up to 1 hour workouts a day........and yes some of those exersizes u can definately feel...lol..i dont think i will get bored with it, i like how new challenges open up after i masterd some levels and how i can choose different exersizes.......after the fit i usually end up playing the sport game and play tennis or box or bowl or all three.........so for me it is the best solution to get my body moving.......lol...and i have fun doing it.....haven't figured out if u can exersize with ur friends long distance yet,(once i hook it up online) but if so that would be even better, then i could work out with my daughter after she has her baby in two weeks.........guess i have to check into that.......It is really fun and gets u moving......two thumbs and two toes up for me....lol.

A couple of my friends have it and I have tried it myself. For those who would otherwise too lazy to step into a gym, or go for a walk or run, or take their dog out of their backyard, this is probably a good product. It definitely doesn't compare to the real thing.
I love how people claim they are good at tennis or boxing or something and you ask them about it and they say they play it on the wii. Their technology is their real world.
