Meet Bird. We love him so but he can be one fussy jerk. When our roommate moved out and there was a temporary upheaval of furnishings, Bird let his annoyance be known by opting out of his litter box. Jump down to see which product we turned to and, all urine aside, which other bad behaviors it can help...
Our vet recommended we look into Feliway by Comfort Zone. When cats rub their faces on furniture, doorways, and you, they're marking their territory. Feliway, available in a plug-in diffuser or spray, mimics this same facial pheromone and puts your cat at ease.
Feliway not only helps out with urine marking but it's also good for furniture scratching, aggression with other animals or people, and new environments. The diffuser, which we tested, is the better option for ingraining better behavior in the long-term. The spray should be used for quick fixes, like spraying your car before taking your pet to the vet.

Our experience with Feliway is that it works. Bird has fewer "accidents" (although he's still sensitive to a dirty box), gets along better with our other cat, and is generally more affectionate. Feliway isn't cheap but we will definitely turn to it again in future stressful times, especially after we found coupons!
I have heard good things about this from other people as well.

I also use Feliway. My cat is very very anxious and has a tendancy to 'mark' our couch.
He is much better now that I have the room diffuser, and I often find him laying on his back on the couch. Like he is 'friends' with the couch now.
I still live in constant fear that he will mark again, so I am making sure to keep his box clean, water and food full, making sure he is happy. I am pretty sure Feliway has helped, but I don't want to risk finding out by not using it.
I find the best prices are on Amazon.com

We also used Feliway after we had our floors redone and our cat expressed her displeasure on our bed. This behavior has disappeared, but we still use it on her carrier when traveling to the vet.

My cat pees more on areas that I've sprayed with Feliway! I wish I could get the $30 back I spent on it.

Hmmm, i'd like more info on this. My cat is lonely because another cat moved out, and new people ( w no cat) moved in. Do you think this would appease her?

Is there something like this for dogs?

Right before a recent move, my cat started scratching on one piece of furniture that we have owned since January. I started using the Feliway spray, and the behavior has improved.

Feliway works great. My cat Sammy was very stressed when I got a dog, and showed his displeasure by marking the bed. He still doesn't like the dog (it's been 8 years!) but now he tolerates him, as long as they stay out of each others way. Spraying Feliway really did help get Sammy through the period of adjustment.

I have a shelter puppy who has strong fear issues. I was desperate, plugged one into the bedroom where we all sleep. It took about a week, but I knew something had changed.
I plugged another one into the kitchen/den area where he spends time with us during the day. It has made a huge improvement! It won't fix the behavior, but gives you a calm enough animal to retrain, or help them through a difficult, stressful time.
He's now calm enough that when the doorbell rings, I have been able to teach him to "go to his room" instead of lunging at the stranger at the door. It works! But acknowledging what the animal is telling you with the behavior, and training, is obviously necessary as well.

Ok that photo of the white cat on the rug is AWESOME.
That is all.

My cat craps on the floor next to the litter box with very little provocation.
Keep in mind that I have one cat, a relatively small one-story apartment, and two large, uncovered litterboxes that I clean twice a day.
I love my cat, but honestly: Why, kitty, why????

Elvedon, how old are the litter boxes? My cat started doing the same thing, despite having a clean, freshly scooped box every day. I finally replaced the box (she'd been using it for about a year and a half), which did the trick.

Elvedon - and try a different litter - esp. if you've changed recently, change again. Some don't like the feel of certain litters on their paws.

I'm curious... why DO people have cats as pets?

I LOVE Feliway. My cat Penny suddenly developed a very strange, never fully explained anxiety problem one night in May 2007. (The only thing we've ever been able to figure is that it started the night I came back from visiting my mother-in-law's cat, and Penny smelled the bag that the cat had been rubbing on.) From that point on, she became incredibly jumpy, anti-social, and she peed on the couch, our bed, and the kitchen floor all the time. After about six months of that, and several trips to the vet where the doctor couldn't find a single thing physically wrong with Penny, I finally decided to try Feliway. It worked wonders! She was still a little jumpy and peed on the floor a few times, but the improvement was amazing. When we moved across the country a few months ago, we also sprayed the travel version in her travel kennel every morning and in our hotel rooms every night, and Penny was just as relaxed as she'd been before her weird anxiety onset.
(Since moving, she's been completely cured. We never did figure out what the hell was wrong, but apparently living 3000 miles away helped. My husband says that our old apartment must have been haunted!)

that second picture is so adorable!
i bought feliway because my cat really doesn't handle car trips well and ends up using the entire interior as a litter box. but it hasn't really done anything. so for me, it was a real waste of money. too bad.

Feliway has never worked well on my Kilala. The only difference it made was when he was shut in a room with the diffuser and even then only slightly better. But he never marks or anything he just goes through this crazy almost as if in heat moods where he snuggles everything to a fault, even the boyfriend ~sigh~

Spins, you questioned why people have cats....
because they're good days vastly outweigh the bad!
Having a relationship with a dog is like having a relationship with a child....
Having a relationship with a cat is like having a relationship with an adult...
and I don't like kids!
