From SSBS: Hidden Litter Box

2006-07-10-smallspace.jpg

Guess: Where is the litter box in the picture above? We watched Small Space Big Style over the weekend and thought cat owners might be interested in studio apartment dweller Kelly Giesen's solution to an ongoing dilemma - where to put the litter box...

Answer: Hidden under the ottoman at the foot of the bed.

Kelly took a simple bench style ottoman that would fit a standard kitty litter box underneath. She then had it upholstered with split box-pleated fabric to allow easy access for her pet without having the box on display. A simple elegant fix.

Forget the litter box how can I get my studio to look that good. Damn that's one hell of a decorator.

very nice camouflage, but i'd definitely move it away from the bed. that would definitely be one of the worst smells to wake up to!!!

Are you kidding? Her kitchen is in that same room. That's where the photog's standing. What she did with it amazing but I can't imagine putting in the effort to squeeze a tiny gourmet kitchen, dining room, living room and luxury bedroom into a studio. And all in cream too!

And the sound of a cat digging around in a litterbox would be a definite romantic mood killer!

I really liked this idea!

As for the odor: there are excellent odor control litters out there, including a lovely lavender-scented, corncob based, flushable litter that I use (linked in my name). It's a little expensive, but all I smell is lavender...

I saw this show too and was very impressed with what she did with such a small space. Realistically, any where you put the litter box in this tiny studio (besides the bathroom, I guess) you're going to be able to hear the cat and smell the box.

I actually looked at this place in January 06 when I was apartment buying! Not sure if she actually did sell it in the end ( i bought a place nearby which is undergoing renovations as i type..thanks AT folks for lots of great ideas) but i was very impressed, it looks every bit as fabulous in person, many creative space saving ideas.

In a studio everything is in the same room, so options are limited and everything is in the same room, regardless. The solution: use a good quality clumping litter and scoop/remove it in the morning and then again at night. If you follow this routine, you will not have odor. Another tip, install an ionic breeze near the box. Hiding it is great,as who wants to see a litter box, but resolving the odor problem is really up to you!

I looked at this apartment when I was looking to buy also and it was absolutely gorgeous and so clean to be all white. You would never know there was a litter box anywhere. Kelly did the most amazing job with this small space - and I have looked at almost every studio and one bedroom in Manhattan (as my friends and family will confirm). Definitely the best renovation and decorating of a small space that I've ever seen!
