No matter how hard we try, we can't get our dog to sit somewhere other than the bathroom rug. Can't find Wilbur (the Boston Terrier above)? Check the bathroom! Do you have a part of your house, piece of furniture, cardboard box in the corner that your pet can't stay away from? Leave us a comment after the jump and let us know!
At first we thought Wilbur liked the smell of the bathroom. Dogs and boys like gross smells right? But our bathroom isn't exactly a funky one. Next we thought it was the rug that was down, but on days that laundry happens, the rug is taken up and he will sit on anything on the floor... as long as it's in the bathroom.
Where does your pet claim for their own? The basket on your table? The space under your side table? Let us know and leave us a comment below!
What space DON'T they claim?
The entire house is designed for their pleasure and convenience....and rightly so.

My cats have a specific couch cushion that they both covet. I have three back cushions they could choose from that look out the window but they both want the end cushion. It has a big permenent dent that can't be fluffed out...I even opened the cushion and tried to fluff it out from the inside..no luck. They made it just the way they like it!

My younger cockatiel Shadow likes to fly to the dining room chair across from me at meal times. I put some food at the table for him, but he prefers to tear apart "his" placemat.

a faux-leather purse that was thrown underneath the bed is their pride & joy

Despite the expensive cat bed I bought her, I think Lou Lou would live permanently in my closet, sleeping on fallen clothes, if I let her. I too have an old tote bag that made its way under the bed and has become a little nest for her. Cats!

If I let them, they'll claim all!

Meow Meow loves the vintage ottoman..it's basically a glorified cat bed..Moo Moo loves the wierd space underneath the bathutub..and anywhere else under something. They also both love the piled clothes bounty on the floor..I've stopped buying cat beds because they don't get used and Meow Meow pees on them so Moo Moo won't use them.

All of the house belongs to my cat---but she does seem to also favor the bathroom rugh the most. It must be the smell of feet she likes.

Ginger the Sheltie is found in one of four places - lying on the floor beside the living room couch, on the bathmat next to the tub, in the upstairs hallway just outside my bedroom, or, her favourite, the bottom step. She likes to sleep here with her left paws hanging over the edge.
Cat usually picks a place and claims it for a week. Amongst the most interesting were on top of the coat closet (how did he even get up there?!) and in the bathroom cupboard on top of the towels.

Panton and Noguchi (my two modern kitties) have claimed my Vintage Danish Modern Sofa, 50's boomerang chair, Barbarella bed, and of course a cardboard box they've scratched to death. It's good to see they aren't just vintage/modern snobs and act like normal cats sometimes.
^^
=' '= (that's supposed to be a kitty i think)

Adorable dog... but almost as importantly, where did you get that shower curtain???

delilah, my dog, has a lovely dog bed in my office/studio, but prefers to sleep under my feet/chair. in the bedroom, she has claimed the oversized, low slung velvet chair as her own. henry and june, the kitties, prefer the more tailored velvet covered chair in my studio, the folded quilt on the night stand, and the pink velvet couch. we only have 500 s/f, so they get around.

he obviously has no insecurity issues.

our three cats each have their own space ...
burt: loves to take over your seat as soon as you leave the couch. and when we're curled up in bed, he sleeps under the covers next to one of us with his head on the pillow.
maggie: my office chair.
bella: either on my boyfriend's clean pants or his dirty socks. or on the top of the couch cushion, so it sinks down like it's attacking you (but only behind your head. if no one's on the couch, it's dirty socks all the way).

My cat loooves the Ikea Poang footstool. it's permanently covered in cat hair. My mom has one at her house too, and her cats fight over it. If not there, either on the floor or on my boyfriends clean work pants also, craftandfound!

At night, Homer the cat (now passed on) would sleep on the stair landing. At meal times, he'd sit on the credenza with his tail tucked around his front paws, watching us. And he knew where the sun patches would be at any time of day, and would follow them around (not so much a favored piece of furniture, but a favorite spot nonetheless). Oh, is he missed.

Haha Marknarlington, I was wondering the same thing but didn't want to ask because then I'd own FOUR shower curtains.... but I only have one shower! I have never heard of anyone else who has a shower curtain collection....

Growing up, we had two subsequent sets of kitty siblings that would tear the fabric on the boxspring of my parents' bed and climb up into the box spring.
If we couldn't find them, we'd feel around under the bed for a warm, firm mass hanging from the box spring.
Once our golden retriever-german shepherd mix grew out of puppyhood, she claimed my father's recliner as her own. No human has sat there since. It was HER chair, the rest of us were left to sit on whatever other seating options are available.

Gus, our amazing Boston Terrier, is all about the laps. All day long he is glued to my lap at our studio [wwwohmydogphoto.com].
But then, in the middle of the night he creeps quietly, ever so gently, under the covers where we find him every morning. We are considering adding a bell to his collar.
Gus also has a place we call S3 [sacred sunny spot] It moves around the house, but when there is no lap that is where you will find the amazing Gus. [http://thedailygus.blogspot.com/2008/08/back-to-school.html]

My dog Owen curls up on the top of one of the back cushions on the couch, like a cat might do. It has a permanent dent in it now. He used to make a tower out of the throw pillows and perch on top, but now he likes the sofa back better.

my cats love the eames chairs, so i have to de-fur them every day.
other fave places are:
- under the bed
- in the bed
- next to the computer's keybord
-on top of the cockle stove

Monkey (my cat) goes through phases of claimed space. Currently it's the small table in the kitchen where he likes to stretch out and lounge. Other places include atop the linen closet (which also has two big boxes on top of it so he just fits between them and the ceiling), a corner of the sofa (and always the same corner), my bed and right in the middle of the living room rug.

Anna (my cat) Loves to lounge on this little ottoman I have, she'll be on that thing for days on end, only gets up to do her business, eat and stretch. Gretta (my dog) is wherever I am, she is like my shadow, but when i am not home she likes to lay on the right hand corner of my sofa.

As hdtex said, what space DON'T they claim?
They do have their favorites, though.
My cats, Polly and Hank, claim ALL of the window sills. Gone are my dreams of displaying fancy glass vases there.
Polly also loves to lounge on our hardly-used dining table, while Hank prefers a basket of clean, freshy folded laundry. He also loves my new vintage desk/lounge chair, although I'm slowly breaking him of that habit.

growing up my one dog claimed my our old recliner. now that its gone and he's gotten older, he likes to watch the world from the top of the stairs or on a step with his snout through the banister. our other dog claims the lap of whomever is seated on the couch and since she can't jump up on it, if you don't pick her up, she claims your feet.

I bought a flotaki rug and my dog decided it was the best doggy bed ever. He loved the thing. So I decided to turn it into a dog bed, since he was getting it...doggy. I reality I think he was just telling me that it was a bad design decision - it really did not go well in the living room.

My Salvador likes to sleep on the bed... when we are not in it. If we sleep in he knocks things off the bedside tables until we are awake, then claims his spot

I have one cat who goes to the (home) office with me. She sits in a chair next to mine (the chair MUST be moved next to me if it has been shoved across the room.) She lunches at the same time I do, and then returns to the office with me. My other cat sits in a chair on the front porch, all day. I think he takes excursions, but mostly, he just sits.
They both sleep in my bed. But always on opposite sides or opposite ends.

the only part they don't claim is the kitchen and bathroom counters. Otherwise, there's not a place in the house they don't nap in. There are favorite places -- comfy chairs and the bed -- but at some point I got honest with myself and realized that they use my home and funishings more than I do!

The loveseat, all of it, nobody can sit on it, no matter how much I clean it, put some covers to control the cat hair, Lola and Chuchi are always there, so it's always full of hair. I want to change the living room layout, but I think they don't want me to move it. The other new mom, Visky, has claimed the bathroom in the hall and all of the hall, no cat is allowed to pass through the hall, not even look at it! She's there with her kitties and always in the lookout for trespassors.

My golden retriever claimed the two landing steps that bisected our staircase. Out of the 17 stairs, she wanted the two that were triangles. She could survey the upstairs and the front door (and my mom's home office) all while looking 100% relaxed.

Szechaun's favorite spot is the sink in the hall bathroom. She licks up all of the leftover water and then curls up for hours.
My husband and I are completely guilty of bowing to this--we go to the kitchen to spit our toothpaste and wash our hands if the sink gets occupied before we are done!

Pepe likes my bed lots, especially when it isn't made! If it's the morning and it's sunny, he'll climb onto the guest bed and sunbathe for a bit. Other than that, his favourite spot is ontop of the chair in the window! He likes to laze around and watch the world go by.

Our old bichon, Lily, has taken to lying in the kitchen beside the floor vent, because it blows cool air and the tile is nice and cool. When her bones bug her, she'll get on the "dog bed" we made for her in the family room, which is a piece of foam covered in one of our afghans, thrown on the floor.
She used to love to perch on the back of the living room couch while we were at the computer, but since it's been moved she'll crawl into the corner between the computer hutch and the piano and snooze.
And she loooooves her crate. She goes up to the bedroom to nap in her crate a few times a day.
We block off all the other rooms and bathroom because she likes to pee on the bathmat and/or any clothes left on the floor.

My sweater drawer in my dresser. When I go out of town I leave it open for them. As much as I hate it when cat hair is all over my dry clean only sweaters, it looks so darn comfy!

my choc. lab, mona and i recently moved in with my boyfriend and after a small adjustment period has found herself a new spot on his leather chair. it's the perfect security sized space for her when she's scared of the rain and keeps her off the couch :)

My Orange Tabby has claimed one chair from the dining room table. When not in use we move it to almost in the living room so he can be a part of whatever my husband and I are doing without leaving his favorite spot.
My Sphynx claims any article of clothing my husband or I should happen to leave on the couch or floor. A jacket, a hoodie, some jeans... if it hasn't been washed it belongs to him.

petey, my black lab, likes my bed and the couch. and he has recently discovered that he can lay on my roommates bed and stare out the window, and that has become his new fave. so i'm going to buil him a little window box area to try and lure him away from the other places. we'll see how that goes!
