apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

Clocks at Home?

010908audrey.jpgWe live in a home with virtually no clocks (in the traditional sense).

With a cell phone alarm system, and digital time shown on our computers and stove, we really have no need for a wall or desk clock but remember a time when it seemed like a must.

We're wondering if people buy clocks anymore...or do you rely solely on one or more of the things we mentioned above for the time? Shown left, the Audrey clock from CB2 (on sale for $39.95).

Nope, not a real clock in the apartment. Just an old clock radio that's hard to read (and not very aesthetically appealing, but these things never die), and little digital clocks embedded in everything.

Ever since I was a kid, clocks have fascinated me. I have at least one clock in every room of the house -- bathroom included. It's not that I need them, I just love them. My SO is just about ready to put his foot down, as he is of the opposite ilk, and is not fond of clocks.

--M. Graves birdie clock in kitchen (as well as stove, coffeemaker and microwave timekeepers)
--Living room -- Small bird-chirper-chiming mantel clock, fine-art sculpture/clock -- silver construction figures on top -- 'Working Over Time"
--Bathroom clock with a fly for a second hand -- Time Files, of course.
--P. Starck atomic clock w/weather and barometric pressure, cool little Alice-in-Wonderland-y clock, SO's alarm clock.

Not counting the cuckoo clock I can't figure out where to put. And the fly-swatter clock that's put away until summer...

Love clocks.

Yes! I have a beautiful sea-blue pottery clock that I bought in Maine on my kitchen wall, and a cool clock made out of an old 78 record (that's 78 as in RPM, not the year!) that my sister gave me, in my office. Plus a sleek wood and metal clock that I got for my birthday five years ago, in my bathroom. And there's one on my desk ... I guess I do expect to have real clocks around the house!

I am also clock obsessed...at least two or three in every room. Twice a year it is quite a job to reset them all, but I'm hopelessly hooked. I always give a clocks as wedding gifts also.

We just have one: an oversized schoolroom clock in the kitchen. We need it there to keep us on track on weekday mornings. Other than that, I'd love to get a Shaker grandfather clock someday, but totally for aesthetic, rather than timekeeping, reasons.

we have a few... a vintage seth thomas walnut starburst clock in our living room and a stainless steel schoolhouse clock in the hallway (convenient when running out the door to catch the bus!).

we also have a tiny ikea digital clock in the bathroom which has really helped with getting ready in the mornings.

I have 5 clocks in my apartment, outside of the DVR and VCR.

I have a typical blue framed plastic wall clock in my kitchen and it hangs where I can read it from both the kitchen and dining area. I have an old early 90's era clock radio w/ tape in the bathroom for both listening to my fav station and keeping up with the time.

The bedroom actually has 3 clocks, one the clock radio I've had now 12 years, a travel clock on the other side of the bed that Mom gave me and a red, black, white modern quartz modern analoge clock, circa late 80's on my desk that needs a new battery and I intend to replace it with something electric from the 70's that is also modern and very cool.

I do want a replica George Nelson ball clock for the living room. :-)

I am a clock-person as well... looking for an interesting, wooden, non-circular clock. Anyone have any ideas?

I'm with kat1: I'd love to have an antique tall case clock.

I have five clocks -- from my father's old leather bound electric desk clock to an antique mantle clock from Shanghai -- all of which I love. But when I actually need to know the time I check the lower right hand corner of my computer screen.

We have one huge clock above our staircase so that if I'm working on something non-computer-related in the living room, I can see what time it is. But I haven't worn a watch in almost a decade.

In my last apartment, I had three identical clocks hung together. One in local time, one showing the time it was in my boyfriend's hometown in India (so he can coordinate his calls without math errors), and one showing the local time on the East coast, where my family is. Not that I can't subtract three hours in my head, but it's got wonderful symbolism re: our blended relationship and geography.

I love clocks! A Tarabay cuckoo greats all my guests the moment they walk in the door.

I have many clocks. And I far prefer analog time-telling to digital. I was excited to discover that OSX offered the option of a round clock face with hands and numbers, instead of the little digital time in the upper right hand corner. I don't care that I have to move it out of the way sometimes.

I have a Yoshitomo Nara clock in the bathroom. It's my absolute favorite because it's different almost every time I look at it: http://www.littleclockshop.com/nara_flip_clock.html

i love clocks.

i would love to have a nelson spindle clock. it's on my list.

i also really like this ghost clock from urban outfitters. the photos on the page look like they shot them with a 100 dollar camera (it looks a little better in some of the other photos). but i'm into the white on white and embossed numbers on aluminum.

i have a vintage sunburst clock in my kitchen which, not only looks amazing, it also tells me when i'm running late for work. i'd be lost (or at least late) without it!

I think we have clocks in every room of our apartment. I find that I end up being late for work a lot if I don't have a clock right in my face.... :)

I don't wear a watch though... that might help...

I've stopped wearing a watch thanks to having my cellphone with me all the time, but at home where I don't have it in my pocket, I like to have a clock on the wall in every room, so I can just glance up without having to find a digital display (microwave, oven, DVR, etc).

if you're looking for a replica George Nelson ball clock check out this adaptation from Howard Miller (they originally produced it in the 1940's).

My cell phone wakes me up Monday through Friday and never on the weekends (because it's set that way). My stove, hood range/microwave, computer and DVR receiver all give me the time so there is really no need for a clock. I see really nice clocks all the time that I'd like to own but it wouldn't be practical so I never buy.

We have the Nelson sunburst clock in the kitchen, and two alarm clocks by the bed. And one of those old Swatch store display clocks, a wristwatch that's about 5' high, but it's hanging on the wall of our son's room, and he doesn't like the loud ticking at night, so it's not keeping time right now.
